This album is at or near the top of the iTunes and Billboard charts for "Traditional Classical" music, and once you hear it, you will not be surprised. I've purchased it as a digital download, but needed physical CDs for less computer-savvy family and friends, since this is my Default Christmas Gift for this year. (Makes Christmas shopping a lot easier!)

No question: this is one of the best recordings I have heard of the Britten (Ceremony of Carols) and the Rutter (Dancing Day). Beautiful tone, excellent musicality, gracefully animated interpretations. Great blend among the singers, without ironing out the individuality of their vocal personalities. Their phrasing is very fluid and lively, with real expressive commitment; nothing generic about their interpretations of even the most familiar repertoire. Really enjoyed the elegant harp playing from Grace Cloutier, and all the vocal soloists--drawn from the ensemble--were great. In between the larger works (Britten's "Ceremony of Carols," Gounod's "Noel," Gliere's Impromptu and Rutter's "Dancing Day"), the selection of assorted carols is fabulous: "Gabriel's Message" is hauntingly beautiful; "In dulce jubilo" is very personal and touching; "Good King Wenceslas" is charming, with the added touch of a masculine baritone from director (and countertenor) Derek Greten-Harison; "I saw three ships" is just delightful. The Gounod provides a nice contrast, and a hearing for this rarely-recorded work.

I am enjoying the album for its wonderful performances, but it would also work quite well as background music for holiday entertaining. Looking forward to hearing more from these musicians! It is an impressive debut.

Benjamin Britten wrote the Ceremony of carols in 1947 and while the work is traditionally sung by a boys choir, the original performances for Britten were sung by the women's voices of the Fleet Street Choir. That original sound is re-created here by the Etherea Vocal Ensemble of eight women's voices as conducted by Derek Greten-Harrison (a baritone and countertenor who adds the alto range to the group). An equally important role in this now classic Christmas work is the harp and in this recording Grace Cloutier provides not only the otherworldly sounds of the instrument as accompaniment for the voices, but also adds her won musicianship to the solo portions. For those who prefer the purity of sound of children's voices in performing this work the sound of the women's voices will at first be disturbing. But as the work progresses there is an added sense of tonal quality that enhances the effect of the carols. Greten-Harrison's solo 'That yonge child' is possibly the finest on any recording.

The remainder of the recording is devoted to works by other composers: John Rutter and David Willcocks have provided arrangements for the traditional carols. John Rutter's fine arrangement of the 'Dancing Day' carol cycle includes 'A virgin most pure', 'Coventry Carol' and 'Tomorrow will be my dancing day' - a true highlight of this recording. Awet Andemicael is soloist in Gounod's 'Noël ' and harpist Cloutier performance of Gliere's 'Impromptu for Harp' is excellent. In all this is a fine addition to the selection of CDs of Christmas music - this one being in a category by itself as on of many surprises. Grady Harp, November 11

This album has blown away my prejudice that Benjamin Britten's A CEREMONY OF CAROLS can only successfully be performed by a boy's choir. The largely all-female adult choir renders this modern classic with the crystalline precision and delicacy it demands, and I am very pleased with it. The technical aspect is without parallel. Also included on the album are numerous selections arranged by John Rutter, including "Dancing Day" in eight separate tracks. Highly recommended.

Stunning harp playing!! Some of the very best harp playing that I have ever heard. The voices are simply amazing, and the organ accompaniment in Noel is beautiful. This album is a sure winner. A must for your music collection! I am buying this for all my friends and family- can't go wrong with this album.

This is the second recording of Ceremony of Carols that I've listened to. I've had the David Hill / Westminster Cathedral Choir recording for years, and have enjoyed it immensely.

Initially I thought the Etherea Vocal Ensemble was taking liberties with the composer's intent by performing the piece with female voices, but the liner notes explained that the piece was originally written for and performed by female voices. Although I didn't appreciate it the first time I listened to it, this is an exceptional recording. Now that I've listened to it three times I'm in love with it.

As other reviewers have remarked, Grace Cloutier's harp playing is enchanting. She plays more aggressively than the harpist on the David Hill recording, and it works more successfully.

I am sure I will be listening to this magical recording often.

A truly beautiful recording of truly beautiful music. This is by far the most polished and captivating recording of the Britten "Ceremony of Carols" and Rutter "Dancing Day" that I've come across, and I've listened to a LOT of this music! I'm so glad to add it to the very top of my list of holiday favorites (and, for that matter, the rest of the year). Can't wait until Etherea releases another CD!
