I've just started teaching myself to make chainmaille starting with this booklet. There are four basic patterns, supposedly ordered from easiest to hardest. Personally I thought the 4 in 1 was easiest and the Byzantine was hardest, but it doesn't make much difference. You can learn in any order. Great pictures, easy to understand instructions. Great place to start and easy to build on these basic patterns.
