Very Durable, Light Weight, Good Size

I have used the Five Star notebooks for years as a journal for the numerous international trips I have gone on. It is a great size, very durable, fairly light weight, and I like the pockets. This newest notebook has a slight change, which is why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars. The spiral binding stops about 1-1/4 inches short of the top. I presume this is to allow for a pen, but it seems catch more easily on my day pack (harder to take out of the daypack), and it seems to lack the integrity of past full-cover notebooks...generally a definite negative! They have also removed the inside divider due to the shorter length of the spiral...a loss! GOOD, BUT I LIKED THE OLD DESIGN MORE!

Almost perfect...

These are a perfect size for those little desks they have nowadays. The quality is almost what you'd expect from Mead Five Star, except for the finish at the top left of each sheet where the cut out for the tabs are. It's irritating when you need to pull out a sheet and have a corner of the sheet with an annoying overhang of paper.

Two Different Products

So this is a bit tricky. I ordered 4 of these notebooks, Orange, white, black and purple. The white and orange ones are of top quality and I would give five stars. The purple one has inferior paper and I haven't yet received the black one. The sticker on the front of the purple one is also different than the other two. The sticker on the better ones look like this: Five Star Advance Wirebound Notebook, 2-Subject, 100 College-Ruled Sheets, 9.5 x 6 Inch Sheet Size, White (72488) The sticker on the purple one is different. For one, thing, it doesn't have the word "Advance" on it. The better ones also have the statement, "Mead Products LLC will replace any Five Star notebook that is returned within one year from the date of purchase..." The purple one does not say this. Also, the purple one says copyright 2011 MeadWestvaco Corporation. The better ones say copyright 2013 Mead Products, LLC.

Lastly, please note that these are smaller than normal 8.5 x 11 notebooks. For me that is exactly what I wanted, but I notice in some reviews that people weren't paying attention when they selected this item and were surprised by the size. Be sure this is the size you want before ordering.

*Edit* - I just received the black notebook. It is of the same inferior quality as the purple one.

Expected more for the price

There aren't a lot of two subject notebooks out there, and I really needed one. This notebook does the trick, but I found the quality lacking. The paper is thin and, as another reviewer noted, not quite bright. The binding is a little too loose for the notebook which makes it kind of floppy feeling.

It's a perfectly adequate notebook, but I expected more for the price.

Gimmicks just get in the way

Seems like gimmick solutions in search of a problem. The cloth sheathing keeps it from lying flat (so I removed it with a razor blade). The tab cutouts seem pretty pointless and just result in odd shaped paper. (I bought this notebook because I usually like these size Mead notebooks but couldn't find the 'regular' version on Amazon.)

Great concept and size - shoddy quality, bad paper

Wanted to have a conbination to-do & notetaking book.. This really fit the bill, but had some serious shortcomings..

PROs:
1) Great exterior - tough plastic and fabric covering the spiral bound
2) Tab selector out of the way of writing

CONs:
1) The cut of the paper is really really poor - lots of ripped/shredded edges, especially at the top left corners where the tab area is - this little rectangular notch has to be cut out to accomodate the colored tabs, but the cut is really poor there
2) the quality of the paper is nothing like other mead 5-star notebooks, it feels like paper from the cheap 99c loose packs of paper.

Still a good to-do book but not sure how long it will last.

Small notebook

I ordered 3 of these. When they showed up, I was disappointed. I have used the larger 2-5 subject notebooks before and I was quite happy with them, but the smaller notebooks don't offer the same quality. The paper seems to be thinner and not very durable in the 9 1/2 x 6 notebooks.

I am contemplating sending them back and just purchasing the larger, heavier, notebooks. I was hoping to save some space in my backpack, and a couple of bucks as well, but it really isn't worth it to me to give up the quality from the larger notebooks.

Very Durable

These are very strong and durable notebooks. I am not 100% sure that the sheath really does a lot to protect the spiral, but I have not had any problems with mine. I don't like that I can't roll the front page to the rear of the stack as you can with a standard spiral. When I bought this it didn't occur to me that I would notice, but I did. If you have that habbit of flipping your front page to the back so as to present only a single page then stick with a normal notebook unless you really do need something that provides the spiral wire with a bit more protection.
