I bought this because the keychain piece had fallen off of my original one. Installing my chips was pretty easy. Since the battery gets removed in the process, I had to set it up with my car again, though this may not be the case for everyone. Note that it does not have the panic button on the side - my original Passat key has it, but the chips fit inside this case anyway.

The picture of the back with the logo is inaccurate. The logo decal was not included.

This product is awesome! The metal 'ring'/attachment piece had broken off of my key several years ago. I had inquired about getting a new replacement key and the dealer wanted to charge me an arm aand a leg and then some for a new one. I bought this one and took the circuit board out from my old key and placed it in the new key and the remote work perfectly. Thus my next step would have been to take the two keys to a local locksmith and he would cut me the metal blade on the new key for $30. As I looked at it I realized I could take the 'upper' protion of the old key that had the metal blade in it and place it on the lower portion of the new key. That worked great also!!! I was ecstatic, I got a replacement key for $7.00, not $100 - that's my kind of deal! Definitely buy this if you are consdiering - you wont regret it!

I ordered this so I didn't have to pay my over-priced local dealer to make me a new one...only to learn from them that they won't cut a new key from third-party vendors since they say that historically the metal in non-VW ones is harder and bungs up their super expensive equipment. Plus, my local hardware stores don't have the equipment and I have to track down a locksmith and probably pay them a lot to cut an extra. So much for trying to save some money...!

This is my 2nd or 3rd replacement now for my 2001 Jetta as the key ring broke off. Such a poor design.

Quality wise, it's ok. I had to shave down the sides where the key collapses into as it wouldn't close. The remote portion did not come with a rubber gasket as the other keys I purchased did (keeps water / moisture out). It also didn't have a panic button. My fault for not reading the reviews, but now looking at the pics I think they purposely took pics from angles not showing it to be deceptive. Also, the plastic stand offs for the internal electronics did not align with my circuit board. They were just so slightly off, I had to trim those down as well.

I spent less on my last shell and it lasted for 2-3 years and I did not have to do any modifications to it. I would not purchase this shell again.

Had to scrape the inside grooves where the thick part of the key slides around from to make it fling out properly when the button is pressed.. it was way too tight/too much tension and it was preventing the action from flipping the key out easily.. after 30 minutes with a file and a lighter modding it it works as expected.. wouldnt recommend unless you want to chance having to do that work.

This is sh** that does not fit the original parts. The original key does NOT fit in this housing correctly. The original circuit board does NOT fit in this housing. The Battery compartment is oversized and the electrical contact for the battery touches the IC chip and shorts it out, thus my circuit board is ruined now. Absolutely nothing is within spec.

Anybody will be better off buying the whole unit and programming/cutting it. Perhaps someone sells a unit within spec so parts can be transferred, NOT this one. It is so bad, one must wonder if it was done on purpose, as absolutely ever measurement is extremely out of spec. It looks similar but is totally different.

Bought for a 1999 VW Jetta

This is really a great way to replace your old or damaged VW key case. I got this for my 2005 VW Passat. The replacement feels very well manufactured and the delivery was ahead of the estimated time. I recommend you watch a couple videos on YouTube to find out how to assemble it and replace the components correctly.

Not programmable to use as a keyless entry! I ordered this product to specifically be used as a spare for occasions that I'd lock my keyless entry remote inside my car. VW dealer was hesitant to cut key to fit because they knew it was a cheap knockoff form of a key, but they did end up fitting for me at about $50 to cut it.
