Until recently, I'd have agreed with all the positive reviews I see posted here. Sometime in the past year, however, Bon Ami revised their formulation and changed the labelling to add the phrases "Earth Friendly" and "Better Cleaning Experience".

I'm not sure about the first claim, but beg to differ with the second, for two reasons.

Formerly, the product had no odor that I could discern. Now, it has a chemical odor and irritates my respiratory system.

The original product did an excellent job of polishing stainless steel items in my kitchen, including the removal of water stains from a stainless steel dishdrainer tray. With the new product, I cannot remove those stains.

I've used this safe, effective household cleanser for years. Long before our homes and environment became endlessly bombarded with soaps and cleansers loaded with toxic chemicals (and the unhealthy chemical fragrance that manufacturers add in hopes of masking the scent of their toxic chemicals), this product existed.

Its simple, effective formula has been around since the 1880's. I've listed it's safe, natural ingredients below with an explanation for each.

This product does a wonderful job cleaning glass, tile, porcelain, vinyl, stainless steel, and many other surfaces in the house. For surfaces that might streak such as glass and stainless steel, I follow up by spraying plain, white vinegar and wiping the surface with a clean, cotton cloth or paper towel.

Ingredients: Limestone (Calcium Carbonate), Feldspar, Alkyl Polyglucoside (Biodegradable Cleaning Agent), Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate), Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate).

Limestone AKA Calcium carbonate: This is a non-scratching abrasive because it has a hardness of only about 3 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. The limestone used in this product is produced in the USA in Illinois.

Feldspar: This abrasive has been used in Bon Ami since it was originally created in 1886. Feldspar has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. It tends to be softer than silica, which other cleansing powders use. On the Mohs Scale, silica ranges from 6 to 8.5. Another problem with silica is that it has been declared carcinogenic and an eye, skin and lung irritant. The feldspar in this product is mined in the USA in North Carolina and North Dakota.

Alkyl polyglucoside (APG): Biodegradable, degreasing cleaning agent derived from the fatty alcohols and glucose found in corn and coconut.Read more ›

I remember my Grandmother using this stuff! I recently switched to greener, biodegradable cleaners due to being on a septic & shallow well. I have used it for cleaning toilets, countertops, sinks, you name it. The BEST results on my Le Creuset enameled cookware (don't waste your money on their $11 cleaner!) and makes stainless cookware sparkle like new. Rejuvenated the enameled steel top of my vintage farm table, it's so white now! Cleans the oven window & stove. Great for the tub & sink, even the toilet, gets the rust stains off from our hard well water. Best part is it has no bleach or harsh chemicals to throw off the delicate balance of our septic. Rinses easier than Comet or Ajax, no bleach and even though it's hard to believe, it DOES NOT SCRATCH! Can you beat it for the price???? NO WAY!

This is a great cleaning product. I was searching for a alternative cleaner for my enamel cookware, but this is not the formula -- the correct formula is the original Bon Ami. However, I found that this is an excellent cleaner and makes general clean up a breeze.

I love Bon Ami- it doesn't tear up my hands (if I clean without gloves), and it's safe enough for my kids to use, now that THEY'RE taking over some of the household chores. This is the perfect balance of safety and effectiveness- it cleans sinks, counters, showers, EVERYTHING, really well, and it smells nice, too. I would recommend Bon Ami to everyone who's looking to cut the toxic chemicals out of their lives. It's just really good stuff, and it's nice to clean with something that won't make people and pets sick. :)

I needed something to clean my Le Creuset Dutch Oven, that was browned on the bottom and nothing seemed to get it clean. I was considering buying the cleaner that Le Creuset sells, but I decided to go with Bon Ami, and I'm so happy I did! Just as the directions stated, I wet the bottom, sprinkled on the powder and started scrubbing. I used a Scrub Daddy (love that thing) and the brown on the bottom of the pot was coming off...with very little elbow grease!

The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars, is because of the packaging. There's no way to seal off the top of Bon Ami. If you peel off the sticker, the five or so holes on the top (where you sprinkle out the powder) remains open. I know this is an old school product, but I wish they updated the packaging to at least give us a way of sealing the product so it doesn't spill out if overturned. So for now, it's sealed in plastic wrap.

Do you have food particles burnt on your Le Creuset enamel pots? My wife HAD to have a complete set of Le Creuset, so Christmas was VERY expensive last year. There is also a learning curve to cooking with these enamel coated iron pots which resulted in burnt-on food in the bottom. No cleanser in the house (and we own them all), including Le Creuset's own brand of cleaner, even started to remove the burnt food residue. My wife was near tears as she saw her new, very expensive, cookware now containing brown and blackened patches all over the bottoms.
I grew up with Bon Ami using it all around the house but I hadn't seen it in stores for decades. I had even forgotten about it until I was watching an old movie re-run of "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" (the cleanser name was used as a running gag during the movie). My wife looked at me with much skepticism when I mentioned trying Bon Ami to clean her new pots (she thought Bon Ami was a made-up name in the movie). Additionally, she has always maintained the "new" cleansers would be better than the old ones because of advancements in science and chemistry.
Bon Ami household cleanser has been around since 1886 and contains no harsh chemicals or abrasives (how many original products are still being manufactured after 129 years that DON'T work?...not many, I'd say). I got a can of Bon Ami and, with my wife looking over my shoulder, arms crossed and a sneer on her face (she was sure Bon Ami wouldn't work OR it would ruin the pot forever) I applied a sprinkle of Bon Ami and, after a little elbow grease, my wife was beaming. Whew...
Don't waste your time and money on other cleansers, Bon Ami and a sponge were all I needed to clean even the most burnt-on food from our Le Creuset. Now our pots look brand new again.Read more ›
