Why have I never heard of this product before?!? Five years ago, I bought (or rather, I invested) in my first pre-lit tree. It was a beautiful, 12-footer with literally thousands of lights. Every year I would notice a few lights burning out, but the rest of the lights would stay lit. And every year, I would hold my breath as we tugged all five sections up from the basement. I knew that sooner or later, a huge chunk of the tree would not light. Well, today was my Christmas doomsday, as several huge areas were dark after plugging them in. I was heart-broken. I figured that I would spend the next week changing bulbs and fuses. I never changed the bulbs before as I always found them impossible to remove from the little sockets. Before this tree, Christmas lights were just disposable to me, as I'd never had any luck with trying to fix them when they went out.

Then I remembered hearing last week a radio DJ mentioning a friend who bought a "gun" that helped to change Christmas lights, so I though I'd try to find the product they were talking about, thinking maybe it would make the task ahead easier. Well, I'm not sure that this is the same product, but I can't imagine anything else that would be more helpful. I used the Light Keeper Pro to remove a light, I plugged it into the little light socket and clicked. Five branches that were dark, were suddenly lit. I repeated this several times, and it took care of everything except for 3 or 4 smaller branches. I then used the voltage detector to pinpoint the problem to one small area at the tip of one branch. The 3rd light I removed was the one with the problem, and the final branches lit. I also changed out the bulbs that have burned out over the last few years.

The youtube videos show the device working great, but this doesn't match my experience. Plugging in an empty light socket didn't work since my sockets didn't fit because they have the side clips found with mesh-style lights. There is a notch in the device to accommodate this style, but the notch is too small.

Using the current beeper method didn't work on a mesh style set of lights, either. I think it would work on a single strand, but it continuously gave wrong indications (both false positive and false negative signals) on the mesh. After taking out the 8th lamp that was actually good, I gave up on that method as well because I was getting nowhere.

I finally turned to using the "last resort" unpowered method and successfully reset most of the shunts after a few attempts. When the instructions say to click up to 30 times, you have to believe this. I could then plug in the strand to see the lamps that were still unlit (about 10%). The lamp tester then was used to test each of those individually to see if they were actually bad or loose.

Was it less work than testing each lamp individually? Definitely yes. Did it still take a long time? Yes. The video makes it look like it should take less than a minute, but I spent close to 20 minutes just trying to get it to work with some consistency. Now that I know what doesn't work, the remaining strands should go much faster. The more strands you need to test, the more this tool will be something you want to have.

The item was in a plain white unmarked box and not a blister pack. Maybe because of the anticipation of many being returned. It arrived with a pack of clear bulbs, which may or may not be useful. It depends on what lamp size your strand uses. These miniature lamps come in 2.5, 3.5 and 5 volts styles (and maybe others) depending on how many lights are used on in that strand, but I can't tell what size these are. It would have been helpful if it came with color lamps as well.

I've seen this device advertised for the last few years and assumed it was another over-hyped gadget for suckers. Over that same time I've accumulated a large box of lights that either didn't work or partially worked. This year, I threw caution to the wind and decided to buy one for two reasons: 1) because of the box of broken lights that I didn't want to throw away and 2) I remembered all the time I've wasted messing with strands that didn't work right. Boy, am I ever glad I bought this! Of the box of a dozen and a half strands that didn't work, I resurrected all but 3. And those 3 strands were ones that had a non-replaceable fusible light that the instructions say prevent the strand from being repaired (unless you want to get out the wire cutters and bypass the socket.)

Well worth the money!

-Joe

I was hearing raves about this unknown product just before Christmas. You couldn't find it anywhere ... it was totally sold out. Not only did I find it at Amazon.com, but I received it before Christmas. I used it to fix a piece of garland and it was like magic!! This was after I had cut my fingers up trying to test a strand of 150 lights and never found the problem. I can't wait to get to the rest of my light strands that need a little help. The instructions also contain tips on maintaining your light strands, which I found very helpful too. I would recommend the Lightkeeper Pro Bulb Repair Kit to everyone!!

All I can say is wow, what a great tool. We have a pre-lit artificial tree and a few of the strands didn't light this year. I tried to find the bad bulbs with a volt meter but that's virtually impossible becase the strands are deeply woven into the tree making it very hard to follow the wires.

Fast forward a couple of days when the Light Keeper Pro arrived. Instead of following the instructions (hey I'm a guy, we never follow instructions), I tried to trace the voltage with voltage sniffer part of the Light Keeper Pro... but just like with the volt meter, it was difficult because I couldn't cleany trace from the plug to the end because of all the twists and turns the light took.

So then I used the other function of the tool where you unplug a bulb and plug the empty socket into the tool and pull the trigger repeatedly... VOILA... the lights came back on after a few trigger pulls... I then moved onto the next strand and VOILA again... light came back after a couple of trigger pulls... Same for the 3rd and final dead string of lights.

Moral of the story... #1 Get this tool (it'll help keep you sane and get the wife off your back regarding those pesky christmas lights)... #2 Follow the instructions (as difficult as that may be)... #3 For you electrical engineers out there... this is the best example of the need for wetting current I've seen....

Happy Holidays to everyone
