I find the cayenne in this completely overpowering. I used this in Ethiopian dishes and they ended up being nearly inedible. It totally lacks the savory depth of other berberes and just sends people to the ER. The second time around, I used half the amount required in my recipe, then added some additional cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, ginger and turmeric. It was much better, but at that point, I'm basically making my own spice blend. I don't recommend this.

This is an excellent flavor, but be aware that it contains a significant amount of salt. There's 230mg of sodium in each teaspoon. That seems rather high for a spice blend, but it was perfect as a spice for lentil salad.

This seasoning is very spicy; I used it to make curry and didn't realize how spicy it was. I love to eat very spicy and so does my husband but one of our kids doesn't like spicy.
This seasoning is great, just be aware of the kick it adds; start adding slowly and taste after each time you have added something. That was my mistake: I threw everything in the slow cooker and so I didn't taste when I put it in.

My partner and I have grown a fondness for Ethiopian style cuisine, which often requires Berbere. Ever since our local Ethiopian joint went out of business, we've been craving authentic, Ethiopian style dishes.

Berbere is an interesting flavor, and it's very difficult to get just right. This does a pretty good job of getting what you're looking for in Ethiopian cooking, and it has a berbere taste. It's got a pinch too much cayenne and it's a little too sweet, but it gets the job done a lot better than most supermarket brand berbere spice blends will. If I were Frontier I'd get rid of some of the cayenne and pump up some of the other ingredients. Seems it's trying to sub for a generic Ethiopian taste by adding that much cayenne. What you want if you want spicy is a spice called Mitmita, which is the go to ingredient for Kitfo. It's also the spice powder you'll have on your dishes at many restaurants. You can even find a bit of it in your injera if they're doing it right. It also uses fresh ground chiles, which is a lot hotter than cayenne!

...Obviously, this isn't authentic berbere, and it has a ton of salt... BUT. If what you're looking for is a nice Ethiopian base, this does it hands down and is very easy to get your hands on. It tastes kind of like berbere, which is more than I can say for most supermarket brand spice blends.

I love frontier spice blends, I use them on everything!!!!! So why the loss of one star? They need to sell this is a larger jar and the shaker lid holes are too big and you can easly use too much spice in your dish.

I am a lover of hot and spicy food but if I had to choose between flavor and heat, I'd want flavor. With this mix, I found it was heat first, then flavor. The heat superseded everything else and I lost the subtly of all the various spices in the mix. I tried stepping down the amount I'd use in any dish but then would always think it "needed something." I like it, just not sure I'd buy it again until I experimented with other brands/mixes.

Thought I would try a cheaper version of Berbere than the Teeny Tiny one. Lesson learned. This just seems hot with not as much flavor. It's OK.

It was all Cayenne pepper. Fire, Fire, burning in the mouth and I eat spices. Could not taste the other spices, the cayenne DROWNED out other flavors. Proportions of other spices in this berbere were incorrect. Will try a different brand. I eat authentic Ethiopian food and this berbere did not match up. It was Terrible.
