Prior to buying the 570, I first purchased the matching bookshelf model, the Studio 530 as a stereo pair. I was so impressed with the bookshelf speaker, I next added the matching Studio 520C center channel. For music I really enjoyed the 530 model for stereo listening, and used the 3 channel set up as a partial home theatre. After several months of enjoying this set-up, I began toying with the idea of adding the smallest floor stander in the Studio 500 series, the 570. My listening is done in a moderately sized 11'X11' room dedicated to just my 52" tv and speaker system, with two theatre style leather recliners for a nice open space for music and movies. I hesitated on the floor standing 570's, fearing the bass might overload the space. After much research, I decided to pull the trigger on the 570 pair. I moved the bookshelfs to the rear and already had the matching center in place. WOW! What a difference.
The 570 floorstanders pack a much bigger punch, but without the boomy bass effects I was worried about. In 2 channel stereo mode these speakers are a pure delight, with an open, very detailed sound, big and very lifelike.Cymbals, guitars and vocals just sound totally natural. The mids are full and rich without being bloomy or overly dominant. The bass is tight and full, with good articulation and a sense of body to acoustic instruments. Overall, the 570's present a very natural sound, and the JBL horns are much better to my ears than all the various treble domes I have heard over the years.
In 5.0 mode, the JBL Studio Surround speakers form a seamless blend of highly detailed, very natural sound. Everything is perfectly balanced and forms a perfect surround field in my room.Read more ›

It has been a very long time since I have heard sonic honesty for use in general listening. In person the Studio 580 appears to be one of JBLs best architectural pieces. Having compared the sound to Polk Audio RTi10s, side by side, the Studio 580 is truly conquering in accuracy, clarity, and response/recovery time.
In my living room with bare floors and untreated walls, certain types of bass from resonant drums or deep guitars and like sounding instruments, create reflected bass resonance that can be overwhelming to the ears depending on the music one chooses. Oddly enough I have never had enough bass to manage with my Polks or previous JBL monitors. The JBLs however; If the baffles are not in and if the 580s are too close to a wall or corner, the bass surrounds anyone within the listening stage like a cocoon. The bass response and focus has to do with the resonance of mid-low frequencies in a smaller, untreated room - not the speaker. If I had a better sound treatment such as carpet and wall absorption in my listening area of 13X24, the bass would be absolutely accurate.

These speakers are projecting brutal honesty. I was not ready. Previous to setting up the sound levels and treating portions of the room, noticeable fatigue at higher volume levels would set in after 10 minutes. To compensate for the bass resonance in my living room I tested multiple placements for the speakers with and without the speaker baffles. The speakers are currently positioned .5 meter from the wall, 2.5 meters apart and 1 meter from any corner - baffles in. I have reduced the bass tone-in on my Harmon Kardon receiver by -4 as well. My buttery, sweet talking, but easily confused Polks, are now my surrounds. Poor Polk.

UPDATE: They still hold my heart - and pound it to a pulp if I so choose. I have adjusted the bass to -2 in stereo. I have removed the baffles. I no longer feel the resonance as I once did and long listening sessions are the norm.

I bought a pair of 590s sight unseen and have no regrets. I feel that I'm hearing the full audio spectrum with these speakers, no frequencies are missing. Great detail in the mid and upper frequencies but not harsh, along with detailed bass that's not boomy or muddy at all.

While these sound very detailed with all the bass you need, the cheap quality of the feet and grills ruined them for me. One was delivered with a broken plastic foot and grill peg. The grills are ridiculously flimsy, be very careful if you try to remove them, and follow the instructions. The feet are so cheap I could see them flexing from the weight of the speaker, and was afraid to move them. For tha price of these, they could have at least had aluminum feet, and a heavier grills. I sent mine back, I was so disgusted with the cheapness of them.

Just to get two 590s in good shape, I frustratingly had to order five and return three because of feet which were broken during shipping. Because they're massive and heavy, lugging them around the house by myself and unpacking/repacking them several times, very carefully, was a total pita. However, Amazon was incredibly awesome throughout the process; each time, they had new speakers delivered to me the next day, at no charge, before I'd even returned the damaged ones. I called JBL to complain about the ridiculously insufficient packaging, and they blamed the delivery company (whom I also gave an earful). When I told JBL that they needed to package them for the real world, they said they would take it under advisement. I'm not sure how much they write off in damages each year, but if one more had been damaged upon arrival, I was going to switch to another brand. But, I'm sure glad I endured the hassle, because...

These speakers are phenomenal!!! I have them placed in a large dedicated movie room (with six 2'x4' Roxul acoustic panels mounted to the walls) which opens into a pool room/bar on one side and an open hallway to an open gym on the adjacent corner (conveying that it's a big space). They're complemented with various other speakers with which I'm always playing and swapping in and out, including some name-brand subs and even one massive enclosure of my own design/build. But, one thing is constant; these speakers always stand out, no matter the situation, and they'll be a staple of my movie room for a long time to come (or until I hit the lottery and move them into another room).

On a side note, I also love the looks; they're incredibly unique, and not obnoxiously shiny like my Yamaha NS-777 floor speakers in piano finish (included in my pictures for scale). I call the 590s my Death Star speakers and they've lived up to that moniker very well.
