Pros: Excellent sound, quality construction, professional look, another great Polk Audio product

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have been a home theater enthusiast for 30 years, ever since my next door neighbor showed off his system and I caught the bug... (dang that guy!)

Since that time and after many systems and many upgrades, my latest being the Pioneer SC-1222K A/V Receiver, I decided to replace my 20 year old Sony left and right mains. I've been watching the Monitor 70's for some time, just waiting for the right price. Well, when they went on sale for $149 each, free shipping, I couldn't jump on it fast enough!

The sound quality is unbelievable! My HT room is huge at 22'x40' and these main speakers are the perfect fit, along with the 4 Polk Audio surrounds and Polk Audio Center Channel. This was the (next to) last installment in my home theater system, (the last being the PSW505 12" 300w sub, which is on it's way to my house as we speak!) [figure of speech, I know neither of us is speaking..... :) ]

I can't give the Monitor 70's anything but 5 stars, no negatives or criticism, nothing but praise - highly recommended!

You will love music again. Excellent loudspeakers! To begin with, I am a rock and roll person. I have listened to rock pretty much exclusively for the longest time. I never really cared much for other types of music. I upgraded from a POS (Piece of Sh**) "Home theatre in a box" to a Denon amp and a set of Polks with these as my front speakers. Let me tell you...It's like going from SD TV to HD! These speakers are super clean. They have a clarity and imaging I cannot describe other than as AWESOME! Now, I find myself listening to country and disco and jazz! OMG! Barry White comes to life in your living room! Oh, and old music...the albums you've listened to a million and one times will sound like you have never heard them before. You will hear nuances and sounds that you swear were not there before. Music sounds SO FRIGGIN GOOD! To say that these speakers were life changing for me is not a stretch. The bass is deep and clean. I run these as "large" on my amp. I have a subwoofer, but no sub is necessary. They sound brilliant! I don't have any other "audiophile" speakers to compare these with, and I don't care because these sound so good I can't imagine anything sounding better. These speakers are just that good! I am so in love with these speakers. Well worth the investment. You will love music again!

This is my second set (bought them for a friend)...he liked mine so much he had to have them! Matched up with an Onkyo TX-NR717 bi-amped and you have some sweet beats...throw in a high end center channel and rears and voila audible bliss. Save $400 on the pair on these vs. newer models.

Came out of the box in perfect shape. Not one to purchase this type of item without hearing them first but i decided to roll the dice because i am a rebel/ninga. That being said, they did/do not dissapoint. Very well balanced with tight bass response. Cant beat the price. The only thing i noticed is that when really turned up you get a "cracking noise" which at first i thought a defective speaker, but actually it was the air port at the bottom ( which was noise im sure coming from the cone speaker through the air port) but once i diagnosed and played around with them, that noise or as i like to call it, kick back, would go away WITHOUT the covers on..... Go figure. This is a non issue for me as i rarely turn it up this loud. I can only assume this is due to the amount of air produced once turned up and the air escaping from the port cannot push out enoung due to the cover(s) being in place not allowing to push through the cover hence the kickback causing the noise...

If you're looking for a review filled with technical jargon, you won't find it here. Honestly, I'm not interested in the electro mechanical physics behind music reproduction. What I am interested in is clear, clean sound from my system. For power I'm using a 120 watt per channel JVC SR-501 receiver I purchased new in 1979. CD player is a new Onkyo single disk player C-7030. The speakers were purchased directly from the Polk factory and arrived in perfect condition.

After setting up the components in my basement, I listened to Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon. What was planned to be a quick sound check turned into listening to the entire CD. I was very pleased with the quality of these speakers. The sound was clear and crisp. I was hearing subtle things a lessor speaker could not reproduce. My now antique receiver was way ahead of its time and includes a built in graphic equalizer. With the five band equalizer, I'm able to fine tune the sound to best optimize the audio components for the type of music and listening conditions. I know, this is more about my actual system than the speakers but think it's important to understand what platform I'm using to feed the speakers. I really like what these speakers have to offer. They work best when driven with power. The specs say 20 to 270 watts per channel. I would say 50 watts should be your minimum per channel to fully open up the sound. As far as bass is concerned, it has good punch for me. You may want more if listening to movies but I wanted a great 2 channel speaker I would be happy with for years to come. I've found this in the Polk 70 series. The fact that they are a great value compared to similar speakers is icing on the cake. Lastly, this model is no longer made so get this bargain while you still can.
