As I was replacing the internal DVD drive on my laptop with a caddy mounted SSD, the thought of buying an external Blu-ray drive occurred to me. It would kill two proverbial birds with one stone as I could use it with my desktop as well. Overall, I'm very happy with it. It does everything I expected it to with relatively little configuration required. Given the current price of Blu-ray movie playing software, it's probably worth the cost for that alone.

Test systems:
- Mid-range gaming desktop, Windows 7
- 5 year old laptop, Windows 8
(roughly equivalent to a new budget laptop)

My goal here is to inform potential buyers with some of the details I wish I'd known before purchasing. Keep in mind that my testing is only for the operating systems listed above with no invasive anti-virus suites installed (only MSE). Your environment is probably different. That disclaimer aside, you'll find within the package:

- LG CP40NG10 portable Blu-ray drive
- 21" Micro USB -> 2x USB 'Y' cable
- Software CD

The relatively short 'Y' USB cable is used for powering the drive (needing 1 or 2 USB ports depending upon how much power is supplied by the ports). Build quality seems decent enough and it runs quietly once the disc is spun up. Do note that this will read and burn DVDs, but ONLY reads Blu-rays (not a bad thing at all, just don't buy it with other expectations). The software included is mostly bloatware but the necessary stuff for Blu-ray movie playback is there. Thankfully you have the choice of installing each program individually, so simply pick what's needed and ignore the rest.

For the versions of Windows I used it with, the device will be automatically recognized, so no driver installs are needed.Read more ›

5 stars for this drive, which seems sturdy and works very well, 1 star for apple's lack of vision and blu ray support on the mac! I'm sorry, it's 2012 and people want blu rays. whether or not apple wants to admit that, doesn't change what the people want...
Blu ray >> itunes expensive compressed files imo

Sorry for the rant.

Anyway, I'm sure you are having problems ejecting the disc after use on the mac. you will find out quickly that the eject button on the drive does not work. Easy solution, if you use MakeMKV like I do to rip blu ray files, then use the eject icon in the toolbar when done. or alternatively, drag the BD icon to the trash. will work every time. Not as "convenient" as the button, but it works.

button will work to eject the drive when there is no BD present. kind of strange but it is what it is I suppose.

Now we just need VLC to support BD decription (ALA handbrake support) then I will be able to sleep a little sounder at night....

Prior to purchasing, I searched online to find its software bundled, and system requirements but was unable to find any. Even the LG site was lacking this info, only informing that it works with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7. Per the box it requires: an intel Core2Duo P8600 2.4Ghz or higher CPU. For 3D it needs intel Core2duo E6750 2.6Ghz, AMD Phenom 9450 2.1Ghz or higher. On top of that it also needs a good GPU.
It comes bundled with Cyberlink PowerDVD Pro 10, (current version is PowerDVD Pro 12, $80 value.) It did not work with my XP laptop nor desktop. It did work on a relatives Vista laptop. There are 9 programs in the bundle: PowerDVD 3D, Power2Go, PowerProducer, MediaExpress, LG Burning Tools, MediaShow, LG Firmware Update, USB Fast, and the most important one: Cyberlink BD Adviser, which lets you know if your computer is compatible. All these programs install to your startup, increasing your bootup time. Installing the software bundle took almost 30minutes plus a reboot on Vista. On the Vista laptop, it did not let you access the movie menu via the touchpad, (it wnated a mouse,) so I had to use the programs navigation tool. Blu-ray disc played very quietly. It has no external power source, using the laptops USB port for power. Depending on your configuration it may require 2 USB ports for power. I was considering keeping it, as I'm set to purchase a New Windows 8 laptop. Doing that will cost me an additional $80 to upgrade the software to Windows 8, bring my total cost of this player to $160. Sadly, I'm sending it back, as its a neat lil drive. Three stars for the lack of information.

I had no problem connecting this drive or getting the computers to recognize it. It works well and has not had any problems reading or playing either BDs or DVDs. The only reasons I did not give it five stars are: (1) It's a slippery devil. Because it is rounded and fairly light, it wants to jump off the top of my desktop tower when I use it there. I have to hold it with one hand and operate it with the other. I think I'm going to put some velcro on the bottom so it sticks to the top of the enclosure. (2) It comes with lots of bloatware on the installation disk. I use various third-party BD players and don't need the junk they provide. Also, if you install the package they include with the unit, your computer may start looking for the LG unit everytime you start it. This can be very irritating in Windows 7 if your UAC is set to anything reasonable. Overall, it was a good buy and does the job. (Note: This will NOT record BDs. It will record DVDs, but not BDs.)
