As my daughter prepared to enter Kindergarten I anticipated her anxiety with a full day program five days a week, sans mom. I purchased this book and created a mommy doll for my daughter to take to school with her, just as the girl created in the story. I presented the book to my daughter the night before school started and when we finished reading it (and I finished drying my eyes!) my daughter told me she would miss me when she went to school. At that moment, I presented her with the doll I had made and she was absolutely surprised and excited to have a mommy doll to take to school. What I wasn't expecting was that she wanted to make a doll for me to take to work, so I would not miss her so much! She dug out the doll the other day and told me she is going to put it in her new backpack for 1st grade. I was pleased to see that this concept is really a comfort to her. It was easy to make a clothespin doll. Furthermore, the transition to Kindergarten went well!
I recently loaned the book to a friend so she could do the same for her daughter. The book presents a great idea and a very cute but totally thoughtful approach to dealing with the anxiety that comes with the whole school experience.

My daughter is almost 3 years old so she is ready for preschool, this book is helping her a lot with the separation of us when she has to go to school (and it's helping me too) I really recommend this book, lovely way to tell your kids that distance is not important if you love somebody and has this person in your heart.

Mommy and Eliza were standing outside the school where the flag was keeping watch over everything. It was Eliza’s “first day of kindergarten” and she began to cry. The tears came out of her big blue eyes and began to run down her cheeks. No, Eliza didn’t want to go to school, but Mommy tried to comfort her. She kissed her fingertips and put that kiss right in the heart pocket of Eliza’s jumper. “You can carry my kiss in your pocket all day long,” Mommy told her. That way Eliza’s mommy would be close by, but when her teacher took her into the classroom Mommy simply wasn’t there.

Everyone was singing during circle time, but not Eliza. She was worried about Mommy and when she touched the heart on her jumper, “her pocket felt empty, too empty inside.” Eliza began to find little things that reminded her of Mommy. There were little buttons that were the color or her shoes and into her pocket they went. When smiling Ruth asked her to play tag on the playground, Eliza said, “I don’t feel like playing.” She hid in the tunnel on the playground and found a little pebble that was “smooth and bright like Mommy’s skin.” Into the pocket it went, but Eliza’s heart was still empty. Was there anything that would help Eliza feel less lonesome for her mother?

This is a charming story about Eliza and her first day in kindergarten that many children will relate to. Of course when Eliza cries out “I want my Mommy!” that’s something that more than one parent can relate to. Leaving home to go to kindergarten is a difficult thing for both the child and parent or caretaker. Even Eliza’s Mommy has her special way of keeping her little girl close to her heart. The artwork is bright, colorful and catches the emotion of that dreaded day.

Not too long ago, we got Eliza's Kindergarten Pet from the Vine Program. My daughter, who's in kindergarten, enjoyed the book and even brought it to class for her teacher to read one day. When she saw that there was another book with Eliza, she asked if we could get it. I was actually surprised she recognized Eliza immediately in the small image! Personally, I think this book is a little better than Eliza's Kindergarten Pet, having some heart put into the story. This is a very good book for kids who are entering kindergarten soon, or have just recently started and are worried about leaving mom and dad for the first time.

Eliza's not too happy about not seeing her mom anymore now that she's in kindergarten, and worries about her through the whole day. She cries when her mom's about to leave, but mom kisses her own fingertips and places the kiss in Eliza's pocket. "It will be right by your heart. Then I won't seem so far away" she says. She starts school, and still isn't having much fun at first. But soon Eliza finds two blue buttons on the floor that remind her of her mom's shoes. She tucks them in her pocket and goes about her day. As the day goes on, she finds a few other objects, tucks them in her pocket, and eventually makes a small doll of her mom with all of them.

It was surprisingly cute when Eliza made the doll of her mom, and is the kind of thing you could really see a kid missing their parent doing. I liked that this story was realistic in how it did this. My daughter thought it was cool as well. The illustrations are basic, just like in the other Eliza story, and get the job done. Like I said, there's a little more substance to this one than with Kindergarten Pet, and we've actually read this one a few more times by my daughter's request.
