My previous experience with door edge guards is with plastic U-channels that slide into position on the edge of a car door. Those work well, but are highly visible (ugly.)

This product is more like a thick semi-sticky plastic tape. It isn't all that hard to apply properly, but does require SOME skill. My first mistake was in only cleaning the outside of the car door beforehand. Since the tape is intended to fold over and also stick on the inside edge of the door, that too must be well cleaned beforehand. Once that was done, my results were excellent, in a total time of under 10 minutes. If you look very carefully from a few feet away the tape is barely visible - further away, it's entirely unnoticeable to me. Good to know my car doors are now invisibly protected.

Other pointers:
1) don't install over a sharp bend in the door. The tape is forgiving of minor changes in direction, but has nowhere to go in a 90 degree bend. I solved that by starting below that bend, which is fine as the tape still covers anything that might hit another object as the door opens.
2) If you need to shorten the tape (as I did), you may find it easiest to cut at a 45 degree diagonal from both directions, and then finish with a 90 cut between the diagonals - in other words, in the shape of 3 sides of a stop sign. That more easily approximates the rounded edge of the original tape.
3) If you care about existing nicks in the door edge, fix those first. As my 2002 Prius is a decade old this month, I didn't bother.

Finally, if your car has 4 doors, you'll need two of these kits.

I ordered this not knowing that application requires a temperature of at least 55F. So I had to wait a few weeks to apply. It is a very thin material so time will tell if it provides any protection. Only 4 stars because it is so thin.

Today is warm enough, so I washed the door edge with soap, rinsed and dried. Oh oh! I discovered that the inner door edge on my Honda is ridged. The ridged material is a slightly rubbery material that has been painted over to match the vehicle color. This may make it harder to stick. However, application was fairly easy - the hard part is getting exactly half on the outer door edge and half on the inner. I did not get it as even as I planned, but it is clear so slight unevenness is not noticeable. Well, despite the ridged inner door edge the film did stick. Will it stick long term? Will it provide any protection? I will try to update in a few weeks.

3/22/12
Even though the inner door edge of my Honda is ridged, the 3M film is still sticking. I haven't bumped the door edge yet so I still don't know how much protection it provides.

11/22/12
Still sticking and no problems. It seems to be preventing paint chips at the door edge.

3/25/13
I would say there is a slight bit of yellowing (barely visible against the white Honda paint), but otherwise it is still doing good. I have changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars.

I just installed these today, and I thought it would be helpful to let everyone know how simple it is to apply these door edge films. First of all, these are actually 2 half inch strips. So it only covers .25 inches on each side of your door edge. One for each door, if you only have 2 doors. This is actually adequate enough to provide the "edge" protection that you are looking for. The instructions are very clear, simply clean both the outside edge AND the inside edge of your door. Make sure your towel doesn't show any more dirt after the 20th wiping!! When you're absolutely sure the edge is clean, Clean your hands!! otherwise your fingers will make the adhesive dirty and you have failed......So be sure your hand is clean as well. This is a 3 move process, outside>edge>inside. Now, when applying the strip, start about 3 millimeters down from the top of the edge so you're not touching any of the trim. Then, eyeball your strip to be about half that you're applying to the outside edge. One hand will be guiding and eyeballing the strip and the other hand will be sliding to press the strip down. I found it easier to kinda slightly stretch the strip as I'm guiding it in place, and it works great for rounded corners too. Take your time on this, so it will look even. It will probably be longer than you need, I had to cut about 5 inches off. Then, you will press at the edge part only to seal it. Finally you will press the inside edge to seal it too (you don't have to be too picky on this part), and voila! you are done! Great product, it only shows a little bit, but does the job well. Good luck everyone!

I've tried several other products designed to prevent the paint along the edges of my car doors from chipping due to bumping into walls or other cars, or just ... mysteriously. All of them were plastic bumpers that slide over the edge of the car door, which you position at the level where the door would be most likely to contact another object.

All of those have at least four drawbacks: First, they always fall off sooner or later, and eventually they will fall off and be lost. Second, being only a few inches long they only protect a few inches of paint, and they slide, so they may not always be protecting where they need to. Third, water and grime collect between them and the paint, leading to corrosion. And fourth, they're kind of ugly.

This product covers the entire edge of the door, and it has adhesive, and it's almost invisible, so all of those problems are avoided.

Applying the strip isn't rocket science, but it does need to be done very carefully or the strip will be poorly aligned, or stick to itself and at a minimum cause frustration. But the directions included are refreshingly clear and precise, so if you follow them carefully, there won't be a problem. Apply half (vertically) of the strip to the outside edge, slowly removing the backing as you go, and then wrap the other half around the edge of the door. The door edge must be cleaned or it won't adhere properly and if it does it will trap the grime there. Your hands should be clean or the grime on them may stick to the tape for all to see.

The strip is narrow--about an inch wide--and wraps around the door edge, so the part you'll see from the outside is less than half an inch and (unlike those bumpers) almost invisible.
