Reasons to judge Bar Tape: Colors & Comfort

COLORS: There are many to choose from and they are beautiful. Really beautiful. But they do fade. You may not like that. I love it when they fade. I encourage you to do the same. It adds character. Even with some shellac you will see fading. Shellac will change the colors too. Even clear shellac will make the tape very dark at first, but it dries pretty close to the original. Amber shellac obviously yields an amber tint. Also, the more coats, the darker it gets.

COMFORT: Here's where I was sold on Newbaum's. It's the most comfortable tape I've used. If you want a thinner feel, single wrap your bars (2 rolls for drop bars) If you want a thicker feeling bar with a bit of cushion, then definitely double wrap (probably takes 4 rolls to make it happen on drop bars). If you shellac your bars, the feeling of the tape will change at first, but eventually it wears into a great feeling handlebar. So don't be too quick to cast judgement on your recent shellac decision. Give it some miles and you will appreciate it.

Comfortable

If you're looking for padded tape, these are definitely not for you. They hold tight to the bars and are pretty thin, keeping the overall diameter of your handlebars pretty small. I like cotton grips because it's not big thick padded tape and I grip them pretty well , but the biggest problem I find is they hold dirt like crazy and if you get caught in the rain, it's like having a wet sock wrapped around your bars.

Great tape!

Love this tape. It has a nice, strong adhesive backing that stays put. I like that it's made in America with eco-friendly dyes. Each roll covers only one side of the bar, so order two.
No padding, of course, but if you're looking for padding consider cork tape, or consider adjusting your saddle/stem so there is less pressure on your hands. I've heard of people putting old inner tubes under the tape.
This tape takes shellac very well. I've painted a ton of of amber shellac on mine (~10 layers over a few months), and achieved a really nice deep brown, Nice match for a Brooks saddle. Sounds weird for white tape, but trust me.

I put this on my old road bicycle, it looks great on it, remember that is made from cotton, so it gets dirty unless you use that shellac thing, personally I don't like it as it changes the original color of the tape. Remember that you need two rolls of tape, one for each side, the price is only for one.

Freakin Awesome

This bar tape is the bomb. Very high quality. Made in USA. Goes on the bars nice and easy. Holds really well because of the adhesive backing. Very comfortable/non sweaty in the hand while riding the bike. This is my first time using cotton/cloth bar tape on a bike. Super pleased. I highly doubt I'll ever go back to using synthetic tape. The only thing that I had to get used to coming from thick gel type tape is cotton is thinner/ less cushy in the hand. That's it.

Great amount of cushion, for other purposes too

I was looking for a way to cushion the handles of my jewelry tools (pliers, cutters, etc.). I stumbled upon this and decided to try it, 6 dollars is not a huge investment. I received it promptly, and wrapped it around the handles of my tools. I decided to use two rounds on each one, which gives the perfect amount of cushion for my hands. The only thing that i am not sure of is that the ends don't really stick down, and tend to come loose often. I know that it is recommended to use a lacquer over it, which i will do soon (Though I was hoping I would not need to, as I am afraid of making the application too permanent). All in all, this was a fantastic purchase, and worked perfectly for my need (even though that may not be what it is specified for).

Tape provides an excellent grip

This tape is very easy to apply and looks terrific. I have used this tape both with and without shellac, it looks wonderful with shellac but as far as grip and feel goes I prefer to leave it plain. It may be a bit thin when compared to synthetic gel tapes, but you can add gel inserts or even just some old innertube. I prefer a solid, firm grip and that is exactly what this tape supplies.

Update: I've been riding with this tape for a couple of months now, about 2000 miles. It's holding up great, there is no unwinding, slipping or deterioration. The tape has faded a little bit (black), but unless you're in full sunlight and fairly close it's not noticeable.

Great cloth tape on a budget
