I got the idea of cleaning my dogs' teeth from a Vet student who told me that I could scale my dogs' teeth myself and save tons of money between dental cleanings and even eliminate the need for expensive cleanings ($400 per dog).

She also stated that by scaling them as needed I would provide hygiene maintenance to improve my dogs' breath quality and dental hygiene.

So, I went in search of doggie dental instruments and I found them on Amazon--where else.

These are very sturdy, inexpensive, and easy to clean instruments. My ShihTzus are considered medium size dogs--16" long and 16-18 lbs.

The instruments are long enough to reach all their teeth. The tools would be ideal for any size dog--one size fits all.

I clean the scaler and mirror with soap/water, alcohol, hydroproxide, and store them wrapped in a clean dry wash cloth.

It is to be noted that the Vet student helped me by giving some quick training advice and how-to info.

Scaling Steps/Procedures:

(1) Begin by nurturing a bond with your pet(s) such that they trust you not to harm them in the slightest. Use the dental mirror to see their back teeth which are not typically visible by just opening their mouths.

(2) I gently lift open and pull their mouth with my left hand from the side in a natural progression.

(3) I mimic my own hygenist's maneuvers and behaviors.

(4) I grip the scaler like a pencil and apply slight pressure. At first side-to-side and then up-down on each affected tooth. Be very careful with the up-and-down motion--this requires rest and patience.

(5) I endeavor not to touch the gum areas or scrape any sensitive gum tissue or nerves.Read more ›

these are the same high quality instruments that you would find in any dental office. much to my dogs' chagrin, i was able to remove big deposits of calculus (also known as tartar) from their teeth. during my last vet visit, the doctor assumed that i had my dogs professionally cleaned before due to the small amount of buildup present, but when i told her i did it myself she was surprised. i have two small yorkies and the thought of general anesthesia makes me nervous. scalers are a must have for any dog owner!

I don't know how this compares to other scalers but I felt like the price was reasonable, it shipped very quickly and it works wonders! My little papillon had major plaque building up and I was so scared to have him put under to have a dental so I bought this and I've been cleaning his teeth myself. This works great and it scrapes the plaque right off

plus the mirror that came along comes in very handy.I was able to actually get a look ,behind,back and all the difficult places that you usually want be able to.

Ok, you could spend $40 bajillion dollars at the vet, overnight stay, anesthesia, custom dog slippers, or buy these. Your dog won't dig it at first, just work on 1 maybe 2 teeth then stop, start again another night, but these removed giant slabs of plaque, tartar off my dogs teeth. Like at first I thought half is tooth broke off, but it was just barnacle plaque caked on kibbles and bits and bits and bits. Dog accepts it now and gets a free plaque snack.

I had a estimate from my friendly neighborhood vet for $400, including anesthesia, to clean my 8 year old mini-poodle's teeth. I instead ordered this.
It feels like really good quality- heavy and well made of strong stainless steel.
And it works! Amazing. Now, my sweet, docile poodle is not thrilled with this process, but she tolerates it. The very first session I was able to completely clean both her upper canines! Just scraped back and forth with moderate pressure and it scaled right off.

For a great price, you get the mirror and a scrapper. My dog's teeth are now so white , whereas once they were shades of brown. Use gentle or no pressure to scrap, since the self weight is enough. One has to be careful not to scrap excessively and damage the enamel.
