I use L-Phenylalanine in the morning to increase dopamine. I can feel the effect within 15 minutes, and it beats coffee. I used to buy this stuff from the Nutraceutical labs like Thorne and BioGenesis, but I find the L-Phenylalanine from NOW Foods is just as effective at a much lower price.

Why do I take L-Phenylalanine? It's a feel-good supplement. Studies have shown it is the counter effect of confusion, lack of energy, depression, decreased alertness, memory problems, and in a recent article published by the NIH, a potent analgesic pain reliever (alternative to aspirin). A word of caution: Phenylalanine is very toxic for folks who have a metabolic disorder called Phenylketonuria (PKU), so don't take it if you don't know. And don't take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The two amino acids, L-Phenylalanine and 5-HTP are "bookends" that increase the bioavailability of dopamine and serotonin, respectively (dopamine for the a.m. and serotonin for the p.m.).

The magic of L-Phenylalanine is that it does not cause a release of dopamine (like the neurotoxic Methamphetamine does) but it increases the availability of dopamine as it occurs naturally in the brain.

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid used to form proteins, and acts as a metabolic intermediate, or precursor, for the production of dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline. Phenylalanine is the precursor for both tyrosine and phenethylamine, and both of these activate your neurotransmitters.

Phenylalanine shows up in three forms: 1) DLPA, 2) D-Phenylalanine and 3) L-Phenylalanine. Of the three, there is a growing body of research to suggest that L-Phenylalanine is the most benign and efficient form.Read more ›

I have a dog with what is commonly called snow nose, a crusty growth appears on his nose. He also suffers from Vitiligo which causes white patches of skin and the associated hair, and seems to be related to the nose issue as his nose went from black to pink. Our vet recommended L-Phenylalanine to help with the Vitiligo which it seems to have done, he hasn't gotten any more spotting, but it has almost completely cleared up the crusty nose. We stopped this for a while and the crusty nose came back, we restarted it and the nose cleared up again, so we are completely sure this has helped.
