Writing as an ex-Army officer and a retired university professor who has had three serious surgeries and suffered more than a dozen deaths of family members and friends in the past decade, some of my depression was "situational." Additionally, for over 60 years I had also suffered from a relatively mild chronic depression that I self-treated with exercise, music, and meditation.

About three years ago, my own remedies were no longer sufficent--a dozen times a day I would find myself thinking or whispering to myself, "I wish I were just dead." By luck, I stumbled across an article that mentioned SAM-e, and by further luck I had a friend (a neuro-scientist at Stanford Univ.) that I could e-mail and ask if he'd ever heard of it. He replied that Richard Brown, a friend of his at Cornell Univ., had co-written a book, STOP DEPRESSION NOW, which would give me more answers than he could. I bought the book, read it, and then tried SAM-e.

I began with 200 mg. of SAM-e, and within two weeks my depression was greatly relieved--it was as if a heavy layer of ice which was pressing down on the roof of a house had suddenly melted and slid off. Within four weeks, at a slightly higher dosage of SAM-e, my depression was totally gone. Of course problems and feelings of grief were still there, but I was able to deal with them without dark feelings of hopelessness getting in my way.

Very properly, Nature Made has put a "CAUTION" notice on the side of the box: "People with bipolar (manic) depression should not take this or any other product containing SAM-e except under a doctor's supervision." HOWEVER, the print is rather small--my recommendation is that they state this warning in larger, bold-face type.

In my judgment, based on my experience, SAM-e deserves to be awarded 10 stars.

I read about Sam-e in a book called Stop Depression Now, written by an M.D. and a PHd. I bought this product at a local Rite-Aid for a friend of mine who was so depressed that he couldn't work or function, and was borderline suicidal. Within a couple days, he said he didn't feel suicidal anymore. Within a week, he was back to taking care of himself, laughing and joking, had renewed interest in things he liked to do, and went back to work!! He is like a different person! He started telling friends about it that were taking Prozac with no results. I was hoping it would help him, but was amazed at the major changes, and so quickly. He doubled up on this so is taking 800mg a day. According to the book, you would start out at 400mg per day, if no results within a week, then up it to 800mg. Like the books says, you also need a good B vitamin complex in addition to this for it to work properly. I gave him a really effective sublingual B tablet that makes a big difference in energy for me also.

This isn't directed at the brand but at the product SAM-e itself. I originally gave a 5 star review of this but I have since had a different experience.

For the first two months, I experienced an elevated mood and I think it did help me get out of the slump I was in. However, in January, I began having severe panic/anxiety attacks. I thought I was losing my mind. I'd have a heart palpitation and then a strange pressure in my head. I did not feel normal at all. I did not think it was SAM-e because I took that in the morning and my anxiety would occur in the evening. I really got worried when my whole head started to feel numb. I got on line and looked up SAM-e and anxiety attacks. I found one blog from a woman who described the exact same experience as I was having. I immediately stopped taking SAM-e and have not took any since. It took a little over 3 days for the panicky feeling to subside. It's been a few weeks now and I'm back to normal. I also haven't experienced any side effects of stopping. I was only taking 400mg per day. I think what occurred with me is that I self diagnosed myself as having clinical depression when it was in fact situation depression. It goes to show that, even though this is an over the counter supplement, you are still tinkering with your brain chemistry. You have to be very cautious that you don't throw off your own delicate balance and send yourself into a tail spin.

I decided to try this a few months ago as I seemed to have mild depression, really more like a bad case of the blahs. After taking Sam E for a few days I found it really helped, I took 200 mg twice a day. After a couple of months I was feeling good and decided I didn't need this anymore and didn't want to spend the money. Big mistake after being off of it for a few weeks my blah's once again returned. I went back on this a couple of weeks ago and once again I am feeling better. For me it works. I have searched and for the best price and I found the best price on Amazon.

I eat very healthy and take lots of supplements that I've researched, and I just thought I would give this one a shot for muscle stiffness and aches. The first day I took it, I noticed that I laughed a lot more at my fitness gym. Everything anybody did was too funny, but I didn't attribute it to the SAM-e because that would just be waaay too fast; however, after taking all 60 tablets, one daily, I looked back over the previous weeks and realized that it really has made a significant difference in my emotional outlook. I know this is a good brand. I bought my second box from Source Naturals, my favorite vitamin company, and I'm going to see if they work as well as these. Oh yeah, and the eternally sore sciatic nerve from my bum down to my right heel is way better, but I take so much other stuff for that I can't say conclusively if SAM-e is solely responsible. Anyway, I don't take pain killers, so this is a blessing in itself.
