I'm obsessive about researching products we buy, and when my son decided to buy a hamster, it was my duty to research the cage. Generally, I found you want the following attributes:
-Good ventilation
-Protection from drafts
-Enough room
-Easy to clean
Reviews on other brands seemed hit or miss, and quite frankly, when I viewed the Crittertrail cages in-store, they seemed flimsy. I bought this one even though it had no reviews, but other Hagen/Habitrail products were well rated. I'm not dissapointed.
This cage is the same as Hagen/Habitrail's Habitrail Classic cage, but with nicer colors. It's hard to see in the product photos, but the construction is such that the white bottom sits below a clear plastic band. The clear plastic extends up the sides as well, and the center is made of wires. The opening in the front of the cage is made from clear plastic. This design serves several purposes:
-Clear plastic is easier to see through than the red, blue, or other colors found on many other cages.
-A good mix of wire for ventilation plus plastic for protection from drafts.
-Wires provide flexibility in where you mount the wheel, the loft and water bottle.
-The entire upper assembly (wire and clear plastic) disconnects from the white base for easy cleaning
-The white base plus clear plastic provides a good 2-3 inches of depth to help prevent bedding from flying out.
The Loft: The loft is made from 3 pieces. The white plastic base clips onto the wires, and has a deeper well for the nesting box. There's an orange lid for the nesting box to help provide some protection from light and drafts.Read more ›
