Still working like a charm. I don't get why this thing keeps racking up 1-star reviews - I still wonder, though, if I'm the only guy who remembered to pull off the protective plastic foil from the box before starting to use it. Every failure reported by other reviewers always seems to be a direct result of overheating...makes me wonder.

I still recommend this box and stand by my five stars.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
My GF and I just wanted a cheap way to watch some TV...so cable/satellite with its exorbitant prices even for basic packages was out of the question. But we had no idea how good off-the-air reception would be in our area, so I wanted a cheap and simple DTV box just for starters.

This product fits the bill perfectly - surprisingly it even has a comprehensive onscreen menu (you're not limited to the simple LCD display on the unit itself) including program guides and all. The universal remote is a nice touch as well. With a cheap indoor antenna we were surprised to find that it discovered about 25 channels, and they all look and sound great, with an occasional "Weak Signal" appearing on the screen on certain channels (that's expected and OK).

Really, this unit has all the essential features you need and works great. The negative (1-star) reviews are undeserved IMHO - and it occurs to me that the person who complained about it overheating probably never pulled the protective cover off the front and top of the unit. ;-) It does get very warm during operation but not so hot that you would have to worry about getting burned.

I for one recommend it. I can't comment on how long it will last, of course, though we've been using it for days already and there's no issue so far. But it's a solid product at a killer price and just perfect if all you want is some TV to run in the background or kill time with. :)

UPDATE Jan-2014: Technology has marched on, and a basic converter box like this is a waste of money. For the same $$$ price, you can get one with full analog and digital output up to 1080i, USB ports that can playback MPEG-4, and PVR / DVR functions, like this one: Ematic AT103B ATSC Digital TV Converter Box w/ Media Player & Recording PVR Function / HDMI Out

I thought this digital-analog converter STB was a pretty good buy... But after two weeks of light usage, it will no longer power-on, and Amazon will only offer a refund, so this ends my involvement with this Sunkey converter box. Since shipping it back to the manufacturer just once would increase the price to the point that it would be on-par with much, much better, brand-name converter boxes, I can no longer recommend this product to anyone. With the other negative reviews here, I have to believe that this item has an inordinately high rate of defective units.

Pros:

Until it died, the reception was as good as my other Zenith and Magnavox units. It even had a few nice features more expensive boxes usually lack. It allowed me to scroll through a full day's worth of (EPG) TV guide program data instead of just being able to see what's on now, and up next (a killer feature IMHO). It was able to set a "reminder" for upcoming shows (needed for scheduling VCR recordings). The universal remote worked well for my TV, eliminating an extra remote hanging around, though its sharp edges really weren't comfortable in my hand for any length of time. If you want a converter box that works great for about six weeks and then stops working completely, then this is the converter box for you! My experience with this product mimics many others here--the product worked great for about six weeks, then shot craps. I picked up this Sunkey converter box at my local Wal-Mart on 07/28/12 and returned it 09/13/12. I originally wanted the box for a bedroom TV so I would have something to watch during those times when my grandson comes over and pirates the big screen. Everything was great initially--the box installed easily and the picture was near perfect. As the other reviewers had mentioned, the box was hot to the touch, so I unplugged the unit when not in use. That 'hot to the touch' warning should've been my first clue that trouble lie ahead. One afternoon, after about six weeks of infrequent use, I turned the unit on via the remote. The green light came on, the display read 'boot', and then it immediately went to '- - - -'. I got no picture, and I could not do anything else via the remote control. Like the other reviewers here with the same problem, I had to unplug the converter box from the wall to kill the power. And just like the other reviewers, I got no answer and no call-back when contacting the non-toll-free technical support number. I usually only buy American-made products, and I should've known better than to purchase this Chinese rubbish. I'm now going to do what I should've done the first time--go out and TRY to find something made in the U.S.A.! Wish me luck.
