As others have said, this is more for maintenance sharpening, and probably won't be enough to renew a thoroughly blunted edge. Seems to work quite well for what it does do though. On a cosmetic note, he rubber grips are actually dark green, not black as they appear in the photo.

Two caveats:
1) This sharpener (and other similar ones) will only work if the blade's edge has an angle equal to or narrower than that of the sharpening rods. If the existing edge angle is wider/ more oblique than the rods' angle, you'll just be polishing the spot where edge meets the bevel instead of the actual cutting edge. I suspect this is the cause of the occasional "doesn't work" negative reviews for sharpeners like this.

2) Because the rods are offset, there is a 4mm gap between where they touch the blade on their respective sides. I.e. the right side rod will be touching the blade 4mm in front of where the left side rod touches. This means the last (and first) 4mm of each stroke will wear unevenly, so you have to pay special attention to the tip and base of the blade when using this. Alternating strokes or sets of strokes going towards and away from you (instead of all in one direction as the directions suggest) would counteract this and give you more complete sharpening at the tip and base. Though, of course, you should do this carefully in distinct strokes, and not simply saw the blade back and forth in the sharpener.

Should have bought more! Tried it out on my current and former EDC and was very impressed how much it cleaned up the edges. Passed the paper test with flying colors. We'll keep these in our auto emergency bags and probably camping gear as well.

Definitely recommend!

I wanted a pocket knife sharpener: and this was more of a lightning purchase, because I didn't do my research I cannot use it on my pocket knife. I can use it on kitchen knives, so it wasn't a large set down. It does get the job done and the rubber grips are perfect for safety, because when you sharpen a kitchen knife it won't slide around the table nicking it or cutting you.

Does what it is supposed to. Restored a working edge to my CRKT in just a few passes. Would recommend for what it is made for. If you want a proper, long lasting, solid edge...get a 5 piece Lansky kit. For quick rough sharpening or to put in your BOB...this is great.

This isn't a replacement for a regular sharpening stone, but does work great in a pinch. I don't recommend using this on blades that are extremely dull or have nicks in the blade. But for a quick touchup, this works very well.

Just be sure when using the fine blade that you do not apply much pressure on each stroke to get a sharper edge. In fact, the last 5-10 strokes, I typically only use the weight of the knife...

This sharpener is good for the pocket and for use when hiking or out in the woods. It sharpened my knives but not as well as I hoped it would. Like I said though..good for the pocket or backpack when outdoors.

I thought this would be too small and hard to hold.

Nope, worked for 2" pocket knives as well as it did for 7" straight bladed knives. Sharpened them (depending on wear) with 6-15 strokes. I suggest a nice piece of leather to strop the blade when done. The coarse worked well for getting small burrs and nicks out but would not be big enough for some serious repairs.

The only thing I would say bad is the knives seem to wear on the rods pretty heavily...so I don't know how long this will last..
