My girlfriend and I were looking for an air mattress primarily for camping. Based on all the good reviews and the description of it being heavy-duty, she ordered this Smart Air Bed Ultra Tough mattress.

Also, because we worried it would not be wide enough for the both of us, she also ordered the Intex Comfort Frame Queen air mattress, which is quite a bit larger, so we could compare.

We ended up returning this one because we needed something larger, but I'll comment on several aspects of the bed, from our experience with the one we tried...

First, the construction...

Like the description says, and most of the reviews confirm, this is a very heavy-duty and durable looking/feeling bed. This would be perfect for camping, as it seems rugged. The material was smooth and not flocked.

There are two chambers to fill with air, a lower base and the larger main mattress. The included pump is rechargable. It needs to be charged before you can use it the first time. The pump seems a little weak to me compared to others we've tried.

As for the comfort...

When I first laid on it, I laid on one side and felt like I was rolling to the center. It was noticeable. My girlfriend was on the other side and she did not feel that. When we switched sides, however, she could distinctly feel a slant and felt she was rolling toward the center.

So, at least on the one we tested, one side felt different from the other, and it made it feel like we were slipping toward the center. We inflated and deflated the mattress a few times, with the same result. Based on the other reviews, I'm guessing we may have gotten a bad one.

Great Quality. Nice and strong. Good air pump. I timed it on my camp outing at the coast and it took less than four minutes to inflate it completely. This is my first 18" high air mattress, and it's also the first time I didn't have to put air into it in the flippin' middle of the night as my wife and I slept on it. Together we weigh quite a bit, I'd say like in the 500lbs range. And it held up great. It says queen size, but you know already it's not as big as an actual queen. If you're gonna share it, plan on cuddling. My only complaint, is it's a little tough to get all that air back out. Oh, and it will never fit back into the bag it comes with. Plan on getting a bigger bag for it.

I decided to give this Smart Airbed a try after reading the good reviews here. The order and shipment went fast and smooth, as one expects with Amazon. I followed the instructions to the letter when charging the pump for first time, and the second use to maintain the airbed pressure until I hear the pump winding down, To my infinite disappointment, I found the pump to have died after this first full charge. Two repeated attempts to recharge the thing were dismal failures - it simply won't be charged to any level anymore. Calling Amazon customer support about the matter did not resolve the problem for me, as Amazon as usual would agree to a replacement or refund, but I would have to deflate the airbed and package the whole order for returning to Amazon. They just don't have a policy of dealing with replacing a defective item that is only a part and not the entire ordered item. I decided that since I don't want the trouble of re-packaging/returning the airbed, which I am still trying out and not ready to give up on, I would spend more money and buy a replacement 120-V AC pump for about $20 instead.

I also tried to find out if I can contact Smart Air Beds for help with replacing the defective pump, but I can not find any contact information or specific information on the rechargeable pump included in the Amazon Order..A bit of a bummer, hence the 3 stars.

This mattress is the best one I have ever used. Yes, it's heavy and bulky and nearly impossible to wrestle back in the original bag. I don't care. I went on a 4-day camping trip with my boyfriend who had just hurt his back. Bought this so he(we) wouldn't have to sleep on the ground. The material is the heaviest I've seen. We laid the airbed on a quilt to be safe but probably didn't need to. Pumped it up in 3-4 minutes with the rechargeable pump. (Do charge the pump for 12 hours before using, as the instructions say. The charge it comes with is minimal.) Because the temperature dropped from 80 during the day to 40 at night I was paranoid and added air for 15 seconds each night right after things had cooled down. Probably didn't need to, but it made me feel good. At any rate, the bed never lost air overnight. Even without inflating the bottom tier, my boyfriend said that was the most comfortable camping bed he's ever slept on. We had lots of room for the two of us and a small dog who got too cold to sleep in its own bed. The pump had plenty of charge left. And I even like the color! And, they included an AC pump for free. Worth every penny to get a good night's sleep and not wake up sore.

This bed is exactly as advertised, strong, durable and very easy to inflate. The bed seals do a great job of holding the air in, and it is a breeze to deflate. The only caution is that the rechargeable pump needs a full 12 plus hours to charge, and needs to be completely discharged prior to subsequent charging in order to develop a good "memory" in the battery. I highly recommend this bed.
