This is the first sharpener I've owned. And for what I bought it for, it does the job. Depending on which hand you prefer to use to hold it down, you may need to re-orientate the carbide and ceramic sharpening pieces.

The instructions were lacking on how to properly use it. I suppose it is assumed someone has experience with such units. I did not, so after some trial and error I came to properly understand the technique.

Here are some tips:

- You want the blade to pass through the larger side of the sharpening pieces.
- Carbide (Gray) first to do the "general" work on the blade. Then Ceramic (white) to do the "finishing" work on the blade.
- Run the blade through with moderate to minimal pressure. The goal is to get the running action to feel relatively smooth.
- The smoother it runs, the lighter the pressure you apply. Do this until you are satisfied with what feels like an uninterrupted run of the blade.

Out if all my outdoor gear that I've bought within the last year, the one I'm the most disappointed in would be my Bear Grylls Field Sharpener by Gerber. Normally, Gerber makes excellent products (they're in my top 5 list of outdoor companies, for Pete's sake), but this product just sucks.

Anyone who's asked me my opinion on Bear Grylls knows I'm not overly fond of him, but he has some good products for the most part. I only have three pieces from his line of survival tools, and aside from the sharpener, I've had little to no problems.

But this sharpener....where do I begin?

Let's get the positives out of the way.

I love the hard plastic casing. It's easy to grip, even when wet, so that makes using it simple. The bottom of the case has a hole drilled into it to prevent standing water when it rains (I live in Western Washington, so we have the kind of rain that never really goes away once Winter hits), so this is a huge plus for me.

I also love how it has the code for SOS, as well as a hole for a lanyard. Or, in my case, enough paracord to have it hang around me neck. It's lightweight, so when I do have it in my bag, it's not bogging the whole thing down. I can also carry it in my pocket when I have my neck kinfe one with little to no henderance.

Now on to the bad.

It just doesn't sharpen my knives as much as I would like it to. I have an old Smith's brand sharpener that I've had for probably a good ten (10) years, and I've only been into bushcraft for about a year. I'm getting to the point where I need a new one, and I was hoping that the Bear Grylls one would be able to pick up where my Smith's left off.

I hate to say, I'm disappointed with it.

I like having a sharpener on me when I am out camping. This one is a great little sharpener for the price.

Pros:
Compact
Excellent grip when using the sharpener.
Color makes it stand out when looking for it in my pack

Cons:
The fine edge sharpeners at the end of the unit sticks open and doesn't provide a good edge because of it. Hard to sharpen and put an edge on smaller knives.

Overall, if the con wasn't that big of a deal I would have given this a 5 star review. Still, the 4 stars is well worth it.

This has to be one of the easiest and best knife sharpner I have ever own. It comes with a convenent cover so it doesn't get ruined. You can probably carry it on a key chain, if you wanted to. It has two types of sharpner plus one on each end of small knives.

ya it doesn't work well... you try to sharpen the blade of your knife and you are actually cutting into the hard plastic instead of using the two different tools! no matter how tight you get the little screw the blades are too far apart to make a clean scrape on the knife blade! so basically you are just dulling your knife more if you continue to try to use this!

I have used it a couple of times since buying it and it seems great for field use. Easily sharpens pocket knives and field knives of varying sizes, maybe up to seven or so inches. After that, you might want something a little more specific for larger knives. Only two types of sharpeners built in, course and fine, so it is really meant for quick and dirty sharpening jobs on the fly. The rods are supposed to be great for serrated knives, but I found them to be a little tough to get the job done, plus they only have one level of coarseness. Still, for field use or emergency use it is lightweight and gets the job done.

I find this sharpener a bit big for back packing. Also, when mine arrived the V notch for the carbide sharpener was too wide and my blade cut into the plastic. I also realize now, that I don't like the Bear Grylls orange color.
