My granddaughter loves this toy. When she first got it, she loved just playing with the balls, now she is older she enjoys all the elements; from pounding the balls with the hammer, to playing music. This toy has grown with her and will always be a staple for me when I buy gifts for children.

I bought this because I really wanted to provide a high quality musical instrument to a baby, just like most of the poor reviewers on this. Only after buying this, did I hear that the glockenspiel was mildly out of tune. I was still hopeful to see if my 3 month old would be able to handle some of the more basic masters works on it (I was thinking Chopin or even a Schumann, nothing crazy). While it did take him 30 extra minutes to accommodate the flatness of a few of the bars. He was able to easily overcome this by using his toes to elevate some of the bars in order to produce the right note. He of course knows that if he does not play melodious music as an infant, I will become enraged. These are after all, serious musical instruments not just toys, as you can easily tell by the rainbow coloring,

I love this toy. I have no idea if the xylophone is out of tune, it sounds fine to me, and we're not putting on a concert or anything. The sound isn't harmful to my ears. It sounds like any other toy xylophone I've heard. I say this because the way the negative reviews described the sound made me hesitate buying this, like it was going to be akin to nails on a chalkboard. Not so. It's not too hard to tap the balls through the holes, either. In fact, I would be absolutely 5-stars over the moon with this toy, except the hammer came apart within a couple days of *VERY* light use. I can't stress how light the use was. My baby carried it around with him for a couple days, and never even hit anything with it. In fact, before I even gave it to him, I noticed the top hammer part wiggling a bit and I just thought "well, I'll just keep my eye on it." Good thing because when it came off there were gobs of dried glue all over the post. They really should have made the hammer a single wooden, or even plastic, piece - Not a hunk of plastic shoddily (in my case) glued to a stick. Really disappointed with that.

We received this as a gift for our toddler's first birthday. Half a year later, he still plays with it daily. Between pounding the balls with the mallet and watching them drop through their holes and roll down the xylophone (making music), playing the xylophone with the mallet, chasing the balls around the floor, throwing the balls and fitting them back into their holes, using the xylophone as a roof for his play animals or as a ramp for his cars and trucks, and trying to fit other oddly shaped toys through the holes of the frame, this gift is most likely responsible for increasing dexterity, creativity, motor skills, musical appreciation, and so on--but, more importantly, our child finds it a lot of fun.

I was originally looking for some simple balls for my 6-month-old to play with, and I was hoping to find something wooden rather than plastic. When I came across this toy, I was excited to see that it had many possibilities. My daughter enjoys rolling the balls across the carpet, picking them up out of the stand, chewing on the hammer, and using the hammer to hit the pull-out xylophone. She isn't quite ready to hit the balls through, but I'm sure that will be exciting someday! Oh, she also likes picking the whole xylophone up and banging it on the ground. So for much less than it would have cost to buy each thing separately, I have a set of three wooden balls, a wooden teether, a xylophone, a hammer, and a ball pounding toy for the future. I'm very pleased with this find!

My daughter loves the HAPE pound and Tap Bench.
If you adjust the black spacers on the bottom you can get a better sound and it is stays a little more in tune.
We lost one of the balls and I emailed HAPE to see if I could buy a replacement from them and they sent me one free of charge.
I would buy more HAPE products for their customer service!

This is such a cute idea. I got it for my baby when she was 6 months old and even though she never got the hang of playing with it, I would play it in front of her. I guess my child is just not that into wooden toys. She likes them for 10 minutes then they don't do enough to capture her interest for much longer than that.

My baby is now a 18 month old tot. We still have this sitting on the floor for her to play with but it doesn't get very frequent visits. One thing she does like as well as other little tots (15-24 months) that come to visit are the three wooded balls. They fit perfectly in their hands. Ours constantly go missing since they like to run around the house with them then leave them in strange places. Recently during a play date, I noticed the naughty/angry/frustrated tots will throw them at each other and their parents. Since they're wood, it does hurt. I also have a glass fish aquarium and I have to make sure that the throwing does not happen around the aquarium for obvious reasons.

The biggest issue I have with this toy is the xylophone. Why even bother making one if the keys are not in tune? If you have any music training or just appreciation of music, the off-key "plings" will hurt your ears. Sure, babies don't know any better. But don't we owe it to them to expose them to music that is on pitch while they're young? I can't play simple tunes for my child on this as the notes are all off. Please toy makers! Please make xylophones with the right keys and tones. It can't be that hard!
