I could not find this in any of my local stores so I was glad to see it offered on Amazon. I used it on a butcher block countertop for an island. It is beautiful. Great finish. Eay to apply. My husband said it seemed to soak into the wood, although he is not used to the matte finish and said that might be what made it seem that way. So far it has held up beautifully!!

As a qualification I offer that I am a competent woodworker. I design and build furniture and have done so for over 50 years. During that time I have used nearly every type and brand of finishing material and all popular means of application (brush, spray; HVLP & standard), pad, and French Cloth. My most recent experience with water based urethanes (WBU) was both good and bad. I bought a General Finishes WBU and was very disappointed. It would be a good product for wooden decks and stairs, but is no good for furniture or fancy woodwork projects. It dries too fast to allow the finish to level out and thus, leaves serious applicator marks in the cured finish. On the good side, I purchased Rust-oleum Ultimate Soft Touch. It is a dream to use and beautiful to see and feel. I couldn't be more pleased with the ease of application and the resulting finish. You will not be disappointed with this product. It applies with a brush and cures to an extremely hard surface that is a smooth as a baby's ..... Well, you know.

I did a lot of research and I read many of the reviews of this product and I was concerned at first. I'm an amateur woodworker to say the least but I just built a 2" solid table top out of walnut for our home...way out of my comfort zone. I wanted to spray it for a really flat,smooth result but the instructions suggested a good brush or applicator. I even called their customer support (which was awesome) and they reinforced the same. I ended up using a .99 cent foam applicator and applied three coats to the bottom and five to the top. All I have to say is this looks incredible....it looks like WOOD! Real walnut which was my goal. This product dries quickly and is incredibly forgiving when working with it. Follow their instructions and you will love it. No harsh smell and nothing negative to report. I wish every wood product in my home could have this finish. Shocking this is not readily stocked in local stores.

Used this on a sitting bench and a few shop jigs. Brushes like any other waterborne finish. We like to use a good flagged synthetic brush. Thin coats is the way to go. Who can prove it's 33% more durable? But the "Soft Touch" is a unique feature, if you steel wool the top it will feel velvety...which can be good or bad depending on the piece. This is the cheapest waterborne finish I've found, that's why I chose it. Have not checked how it's chemical resistance compares to other brands, but for lighter duty projects I will keep this on hand. Trying to be "green" with waterborne finishes and with my sensitivity to caustic chemicals it's nice to use. The product works just fine, anyone who has problems with it has not used waterborne finishes i.e. user error cannot be attributed to the product itself. If I could trust the durability (chemical, scratch, etc.) then it would have a 5 star. For guaranteed strength in finish turn to Stays Clear or General Finishes High Performance.

just fyi, I got mine at lowes where it's only $10.85 for a quart, so it may be worth running out for it. A water clean up poly is a miracle in my world :) I found it easy to work with. It goes on white so it's easy to see if you have it thicker one place than another and love love love the clear matte.

I used another product on several projects but don't like the "plastic" feel after it dried. I thought I would give the Rust-oleum soft touch product a try and I LOVE it! I've used it on a table that I sanded and stained and on some chairs that I painted with GF milk paint with great results. I really like the matte finish--it isn't dull but is less shiny than a satin finish.

I recently refinished a buffet in my kitchen. I wanted to use chalk paint and wax because I love the low sheen and soft glow that waxed pieces have. However, because this piece will be used as a coffee station I knew that a waxed finish wasn't the best choice. Spilled water and wax don't play well together, and my tribe isn't always the best at immediately cleaning up behind themselves. I decided to try this matte finish poly. The reviews were a mixed bag so I applied it to the underside of the shelves just to see how it performed. I used a Purdy brush to apply the poly, and three coats later I hated it. The finish was streaky and uneven despite my careful application, and I'm not a newbie to furniture refinishing. I stalled out for a few days, uncertain as to how to proceed. Yesterday I stumbled across a pack of foam brushes in my painting stash, and I decided to try again. The foam brushes made all the difference. The finish is exactly what I'd hoped for. No streaks, no brush marks, no unevenness. Though this is a matte finish, there is a subtle sheen to it. It doesn't precisely replicate the soft glow or velvet texture of waxed finish, but it's very close. When you run your hand over it, it doesn't have the plastic feel of other polys I've used, but it offers the same level of protection so I don't have to stress about the inevitable spills and dribbles. One of the other reviews I read said that this product did not change the color of their base finish. I did not find this to be true. I painted my buffet with a deep gray flat finish paint, and I found that this poly did alter it somewhat. The color now seems slightly darker and much richer. However, if you've worked with chalk paint and wax, you know that the application of wax has the same effect on the paint.Read more ›
