This is exactly the type of closer we needed to keep our disabled son from going out our front gate into the street. The typical spring closer will slam the gate sometimes causing the latch not to catch or if the gate is only partially opened the spring does not have enough force to latch it. These work like the closers on many car hoods and hatch windows except they are much stronger. They close the gate at an even speed, then speed up in the last couple of inches to make sure the gate latch catches. The force to open the gate also prevents our son from opening the gate on his own.

They make three models and we bought the middle one first (a smaller unit was not listed) but it was too strong. I believe these were designed for swimming pool gates. You can also not 'lock' the closer open like you can on a screen door. This prevents leaving the gate open and forgetting it. The unit specs are based on the width and weight of the gate so compare them before you purchase. $200 sounds like a lot of money for a closer but the unit is built very well and the safety aspect of making sure our gate closes every time to protect our son is worth it.

Note: All three units use the same brackets. The only difference is the cylinder and the spacing between brackets. I also recommend using bolts or lag screws to attach the brackets.

The facility where I work had two of these. The courtyard whose gates these devices operated celebrated its 1-year anniversary just a month ago. The closers were 14 months old.

One closer failed last week. I'm not 100% the closer itself failed, it could be its bracket just pulled out of the steel. If that's the case then it isn't a failure of the closer, but of the installation.

The other closer, which failed back in June at the tender age of 8 months, simple broke. The brackets are still there.

Considering how poorly they have lasted and how much they cost to replace with exact replicas, I'll spend my money elsewhere.

I researched and thought Lockey closers would be great for what I need. This one was bought to replace a different Lockey model I had that failed. Lockey would not warranty the first one because they said I installed it incorrectly(have not asked about this one). This one I made certain I installed it per the instructions, and this model failed even faster than the previous one. My application is for a highly used service entrance gate for a high volume restaurant. I guess it's back to the drawing board because two different Lockey gate closer models have now failed in less than six months.
