I've owned this kit now for almost 3 years now and have no regrets about the investment. I use it nearly every day and have had no issues with the hardware or the drum heads/rubber rims breaking down. The kickpad/mesh has considerable wear where the drum beaters stike (I use the recommend Roland plastic beaters)but it still triggers perfectly. I use 5B sticks with wooden tips and have never had any issues with breaking or tearing any of the mesh heads. I still think Roland needs to work on the "feel" of the cymbals because they do cause some fatigue with prolonged play due their weight. Otherwise, I've posted my original review from a few years ago because I still agree with most everything included (below).

The Roland TD30 KV is an amazing ekit that delivers in just about every category. I have had this kit for almost 3 years now and I can say that I am extremely pleased with the quality of the triggers and the "playability" of these drums.

Set Up - It takes some time to get everything the way you want it, but I've used a Roland TD12 KV in the past so most of the set up time was in getting the triggers positioned on the new rack just the way I like. The MDS-25 rack is solid (no different from that used with the TD20 kit) - and the newer tom (MDH-25) and cymbal mounts (MDY-25) are much heavier and more versatile than the older mounts. These, however, are not unique to this kit as Roland introduced these a few years back. Once the kit is together, connecting to the TD 30 is easy (all well labeled). I actually hooked up an older PD85 to one of the AUX ports to use as a 5th tom, and then I have two older CY14 (black) crash cymbals and a CY12R cymbal hooked up to the other 3 AUX ports.

I saved up for about 8 months and bought this from Guitar Center, (same price). I have a 1000 Watt eDrum kit amp that I like to put behind my seat while I play; Even with everything at 30% volume I can feel the vibrations tickle my balls. 10/10 would get tickled again.

In my opinion Roland has the best sounds, but Yamaha offers the best triggering response and control of dynamics. My personal preference is Yamaha DTX series. Although the Yamaha sounds are actually even worse, the pads are quieter for practicing, and the sound module's flexibility enables a much better triggering response for MIDI recording purpises. Roland may have the best ekit sounds, but they cost considerably more than Alesis or Yamaha ekits, and the triggering isn't nearly as good as Yamaha. Besides, VSTi's have taken over the world of recording. For this reason, I would be very excited to hear about if/when Yamaha (or any of the three above) decide to create a market for full sized dedicated MIDI drum controllers. As far as musicians are concerned, I would dare to say that there are 10 drummers for every keyboard player, and most all musicians start out learning how to play drums first. That's where they establish their rhythm...Then they move on to the keyboard or some other instrument afterward. So the market for such a product has been grossly overlooked. Yamaha would be my fist choice because they have the worst sounds, but they have the best MIDI triggering I've ever encountered. I really wish someone would just do away with the sounds, sampling, and very limited low end sequencing altogether, and just create a dedicated MIDI drum controller! It would be great if it were able to store MIDI configurations of 200 user Banks for various external sound modules and or DAWs. Remember VSTi's have taken over; and if they haven't taken over your studio or music room yet, it's just a matter of time.Read more ›

I don't own one, too expensive But I do own and regularlyplay a cheaper Roland TD-4 and use it to gig in smaller venues. BTW it has held up nicely and I love the diverse drum kit patches even on this less expensive version. I have played this model in the Guitar Centar stores and the the melodic drum patches allow an experienced drummer to sound like a full rhythm and bass section. One would have to learn how to program it so that you could take full advantage of these patches (key and tone wise) But I always have some people stop, listen and other drummers join in around the drum section when I get a grove going on this thing. Everyone comments on how diverse and complex it can be. Now if Roland would just bring the price down to where it is affordable.... they would get the 5th star.
