I want to preface my review by saying that I have been making espresso for about 15 years. I own a La Pavoni Europiccola manual machine and a La Pavoni Jolly grinder. I set those aside about three years ago, because I didn't have time to make espresso in the morning before work. I then went through a number of super-automatic machines, which all broke down in different ways, and finally decided to try an automatic machine. I purchased this Krups used, from Amazon Warehouse deals. It came in the original box, with all of the accessories, and does not appear to have been used much, if any. I paid less than half of what a new machine sells for on Amazon. However, my machine did not come with a factory warranty, so I am taking a gamble in that regard.

The Krups XP618050 is the exact same machine as the Sunbeam EM6910 which has been sold in Australia for several years. There are many, mostly positive, reviews of the Sunbeam EM6910 on YouTube. This espresso machine features separate stainless steel lined thermoblocks and pumps for the brew head and milk steamer; an actively headed, electronically temperature controlled commercial size brew head; and, a three liter water tank with a very large drip tray. This Krups XP618050 also comes with a brew pressure gauge and the choice between single, double or manual volume controls.

For some unknown reason, the Krups XP618050 comes with pressurized filter baskets, whereas the Sunbeam appears to include both types for the Australian market. I was on the verge of returning the machine because I could not get a good result with the pressurized filter baskets and became tired of wasting coffee. The Krups distributor in the U.S. was most unhelpful and basically ignorant.

This machine is amazing, milk micro foam is an easy task with the 6bar steamer and the pressure gage is very helpful in determining the right dosage and grind size to pull the perfect shot. This machine doesn't steam and make espresso in the same time, don't know why Krups chosen not to enable that feature.

As mentioned in other reviews, the Krups XP618050 is a re-branded Sunbeam EM6910 but with a 120 volt power supply which means it cannot simultaneously brew and steam.

The advantage of a dual PID thermoblock design over a comparably priced boiler with a PID is that this machine warms up in about 5 minutes. Brew temperature for the XP6180 can be programmed up or down as can water volumes for single and double shots and steam temperature and pump rate. The drip tray holds almost four cups of water which means never having to empty the tray while pulling shots. The water nozzle pumps out water slowly, which is fine for melting some powdered cocoa, but will become tiresome if you are trying to get a cup of hot water. The Krups will also turn off automatically after an hour.

The pressurized, or dual-floor, filter baskets are designed to maintain pressure in the basket when the grind is too coarse. Aside from the issue of what kind of shot can be pulled with a pressurized basket, the chamber between the dual floors cannot be cleaned which means the basket will need replacing in a few months depending on use. Also, be prepared to rinse the basket to remove the puck or risk breaking the handle of the portafilter trying to bang out the wet grinds. I picked up a regular filter basket at a local Nuova Simonelli store which fits the 58mm portafilter on this machine well and seals better than the enclosed baskets imo.

Here are some observations after spending a week with this machine:

It says to run a lot of water through it to prime the pumps and this really can't be skipped. Run the whole reservoir and then run it again.

When first heating up it makes noises somewhere between a distant subway car and a dog yelping in pain.

This is my first espresso machine and I am new to the world of latte art and espresso. Since this is my first espresso machine, I made sure that I purchased the product for me (I spent a great deal of time researching for the most efficiently priced and effective machine on the market). I've seen other espresso machines like the Rancho Silvia and the Breville (had both the machine and grinder in one), which were all within the price range of the Krups. Each one had their pros and cons and I believe that this machine is perfect for what I want. It has a very good steam wand, pressurized portafilter(both dual and single shots), a heat pad (on top), a huge water tank that can be filled in 2 ways (3 Liters), and a spout for hot water (for tea, hot chocolate, etc.). I believe that for its price, it offered more features with the standard features of an espresso machine like the Rancho. Although it did not contain a built in grinder like the Breville, it is better suited to think that i'm buying a $600 espresso machine than a $600 espresso/grinder machine (as most products that contain a "2 in 1" deal usually means that each of those items are about half of the quality of an efficient machine. ie. the $600 Breville may be a $300 machine and a $300 grinder or something like that.) So I did end up buying a grinder on its own, and I believe it works well with the machine. I ordered the Breville Smart Grinder in case you (the reader) is interested. Aside from those features, the heating process is called thermocoiling, which means that you can simultaneously use all 3 functions (espresso, steam wand, hot water) without having to wait in between each change.Read more ›
