We found these and got them 2 weeks before a vacation. Great price to begin with. This set is bullet proof. The gauge of the plastic is very thick. These will not crack like most if not all other play sets. The rake tines will give slightly but won't snap or crack. The shovel is stiff for digging. Plus they have a little nub for thumbs to help push or pull. The bucket is VERY sturdy. The castle is equally strong. We had loads of fun using this on the beach. Other children on the beach wanted to play with them. Reluctantly my girls let them ;). Cust service from Green Toys equally great. We lost the rake to the Atlantic, we got home and emailed Green Toys on how to buy a new one. They send a replacement free of charge and some little extras.

You will not be disappointed with this set, based on it construction, if you don't lose a piece or two. It will last you for a long, long time.

UPDATE 5/2010

Just wanted to update this review. My girls are 3 years older and so is their play set. They are scratched up like any producted used in sand. BUT the color has not faded and NOT one crack any where. Even the rope used for the bucket is good to go. Now we left them out two winters and garaged the other one. BUT if not for the scratches the look good as new.

I bought these for my 3-year old and 17-month old to use in our backyard sandbox. I was so excited to find something that wasn't the usual primary-colored shiny plastic. This set is gorgeous, the pail has a strong and cool-looking rope handle. Our girls play with this every day. It was a great purchase. Not the sort of outside toy that you throw away at the end of the season, it's just so durable.

This Sand Play Set from Green toys is definitely a Diamond in the Rough. It is nothing like the cheap plastic sets that will bend and disappoint. It is made from strong recycled plastic, that is BPA free, and is tough and sturdy for child's play. We bought two one for each of our toddlers and they love them. It is recommended for children ages 3 and above but our 2 year old plays with it just fine (just watch younger children who may poke eyes with the rake, or want to put it in their mouths - though its safe).

PROS
1. Eco friendly and safe for young children and is made in the USA.
2. The beach bucket has a strong rope handle, (so no bending or breaking away from the bucket like plastic ones do)
3. Durable and quite stylish

CONS
1. Pricey (but you can save a few bucks by buying it here on Amazon, which is much cheaper than other retailers and toy stores).

OVERALL
Worth every penny and will last a lifetime.

Best sand kit I've ever bought. Bought this one for my niece, my daughter has one in another color for several years. Green Toys make great sturdy products that have survived summers in the yard, thrashing, the dish washer and so forth. Unlike other beach pails this one is strong and can easily carry water, sand, rocks garden finds, etc..

I'd been waiting for this product to become available for some time. The product was more than I could have hoped for...no cheesy handle, instead it has a strong rope. It is very durable and, best of all, all three of our grandchildren love playing on the beach building sand castles. In fact, that have requested a couple more sets.

Solid! I live in Florida and the kids sandbox does not have a cover nor do I ever pick up and put away sand toys, after stocking up on cool sand toys from Michael's and Target just to have them fade and crack, I'm so happy to find these! They are thick and solid! I can't imagine them breaking on us anytime soon... I paired these with some Melissa and Doug sand toys, also thicker then the average sand toy, not nearly as thick as this set but we needed fun shapes for sandcastles to. Bring on the sun florida!

This set is small and heavier than you would expect. Like all Green Toys, it's very well made, especially compared to a lot of other cheap plastic sand toys. But because of how heavy it was I didn't choose to bring it on our beach vacation. Instead, I went and bought some cheap plastic sand toys which weigh a lot less. I had purchased it to use as my infant son's Easter basket, but it was too small, so I wound up getting an actual basket.

It would be probably be great in a sand box, but you may not want the added weight in your beach bag.

We bought this bucket for our first child five years ago, and soon after bought a second. It has gone through a second child, traveled to the beach, spent it's entire life outside in the sandbox, and looks brand new. The color is blended into the material so there is no chipping, it is thick and sturdy so hasn't cracked despite extreme temperature changes from hot to cold, and the rope handle is still fully functional. The proper rope handle is what got my attention in the first place, and it can be replaced if needed. Other sand toys have come and gone quickly -- cracked plastic buckets, broken handles, snapped shovels, and bent rakes. This company though has built a quality product that can withstand the rigors of the sandbox. Our only issue is that this toy is so nice we are always afraid we are going to lose it at the beach!
