Using an unfathomable act of violence committed by crazed members of a fundamentalist Mormon offshoot group, Krakauer weaves together brilliantly the story at hand, as well as the foundational doctrines and history of Mormonism to try and explain how something so horrific could happen in the name of religion. I particularly enjoyed his thorough and fair portrayal of the history of the mainstream Mormon church in order to establish the basis of the warped mindset of zealots who take doctrines to extremes. The book is extremely compelling, very readable for anyone (even those with little or no knowledge of Mormonism, as Krakauer is careful and methodical in his historical and doctrinal explanations. I highly recommend this book for Mormon and non-Mormon alike,

I actually read this book a few years back, and was ordering for a friend. Jon Krakauer is alwasy a great read, but in this book he outdid himself. He truly tells the history and present day realty of the Mormon Church. It was informative while also being an interesting and commanding read.

This was a fascinating story of the LDS church and especially the fundamental sect of this church. I learned a lot by reading this book - enough to search out friends who are members of the LDS's and to questions some of the data that was in the book.

At first I thought the book was a "downer" but in retrospect, it wasn't.

It gave a lot more hisotory of the Mormon religion and culture than I expected, but I really enjoyed the book. I don't think I would have understood the situation without the history. A really good read.

"Under the Banner of Heaven" weaves a blood-chilling tale of a religiously motivated multiple murder in Utah (as riveting as "In Cold Blood") with background information on historical incidences of mass violence committed on and by Mormons.

Many Americans have little awareness of Mormonism beyond the clean-cut pairs of young men that occasionally show up on the doorstep offering copies of scripture. They know even less about the fundamentalist offshoots of Mormonism, polygamist sects, or the practice of "blood atonement".
Author Jon Krakauer traces the development of Mormonism from its founder Joseph Smith's days prospecting for treasure with "seeing stones" in 19th century New York. Smith meets his demise at the hands of a violent mob in Illinois---causing a lingering bitterness in Mormons, and resulting in some acts of retribution, including a massacre of settlers passing through Utah.

The theocratic nature of the Mormon establishment in Utah, its embrace of polygamist practices, and its openly pro-Confederate stance in the Civil War, kept Mormonism at odds with the United States government. Eventually, at the turn of the century, Mormons banned polygamy---but, since it was a religion that believed in direct communication with God, self-appointed prophets continued to thrive, and to assert their rights to practice polygamy and "blood atonement."

Krakauer shows how Ron and Dan Lafferty increasingly became attracted to the fundamentalist lifestyle, and when Ron began hearing voices commanding him to punish his sister-in-law and her child, the religious zealotry of the two brothers goes off the rails.

This book is by no means a blanket condemnation of Mormonism. It's just a graphic, eye-opening expose' of the way that fundamentalist practices intersect with lawlessness, mental disturbances, and outright atrocities committed in the name of religion.

Love, love, love this book.
Being from Utah, this is a great book to spell out the truth behind the LDS religion. I highly recommend for everyone to open their minds and learn something new.
