    This tee shirt is 40% viscose made from bamboo, often promoted as a green fiber. This shouldn't be confused with natural bamboo fiber, which has a character similar to linen and is less commonly used in clothing. Viscose is rayon, a manmade cotton-like fiber derived from cellulose, a primary constituent of trees and other plants. It has superior absorbent qualities, and is very soft, making it an attractive material for activewear. As with most modern products, the environmental impact is complex.

    The process of making viscose involves several dangerous chemicals, including a particularly toxic solvent, carbon disulfide. The TASC website acknowledges that "making viscose is not considered the most eco-friendly process in the world." It claims, however, that the process used to produce their viscose recaptures and reuses 99% of the chemicals, which means the primary danger would be only to the workers, though even 1% if released into the environment can be harmful as well. (This tee shirt is manufactured in India, but it doesn't say where the viscose is made.)

    The chemicals used in manufacturing viscose don't persist in the final product, and this tee shirt is certified as "chemical-free" according to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, an independent testing system.

    While the manufacturing process is probably not as environmentally friendly as for cotton--and 55% of this shirt is certified organic cotton--making bamboo viscose is probably more eco-friendly than making the typical synthetic alternatives such as polyester, which is made from petroleum. And as the TASC website points out, there haven't been any bamboo spills fouling the oceans.

    This shirt defines frustrating. It looks good, happened to fit me rather well, and feels wonderful, having truly combined the comfort of cotton with the wicking, venting and drying qualities of a synthetic. In fact, even after several cycles of ride/sweat <--> stop/dry while on my bike, the fabric still felt fresh against my skin. The shirt did not acquire the sticky/crusty cling that even synthetics demonstrate after being soaked and then dried by wind over the course of a long bike ride.

    So why the less than stellar rating? First, when washed, the blue color drained out of this like a blueberry ice pop was melting within. But, more importantly, after the first ride, my backpack's shoulder straps began fraying the shiny surface of the threads stitched along the seams. Let me be precise: the thread's core appears to be holding on strongly, but its "glittery" sheath was coming undone, making the shirt look worn/cheap after one use.

    One other note. The shirt's cut does not have an exaggerated, long tail. But, the overall length (which was evenly cut, front to back) was adequate to keep my backside covered, even after several mounts and dismounts from the bike.

    If they'd have used a better thread, and coloring process, this would have been a real winner.

    We have bamboo bed sheets and love them! I was not expecting this to be quite as warm as it is, but have to admit I prefer all-cotton shirts. I'd hoped this would at least be close - and it wasn't too bad. My first wear of it was in upper-60s weather while mowing the lawn. I actually broke a pretty good sweat despite the very comfortable temperature - something I would not have expected with an all-cotton shirt, for example. However, it is definitely not as warm as a completely synthetic fiber shirt. I can't tell how it's going to wear, overall, but would expect outstanding wear, based on the premium bamboo-fabric sheets we use.

    Appearance-wise, this shirt is an excellent fit for the advertized size, and it looks very, very nice. I expect to wear it during the summer while "out and about" (only tested it that first time while mowing the law to see how warm/cool it was). I don't give 5-star reviews easily, and even with this being just a bit on the warm side, it's still a strong 4-star rating, in my opinion.

    The pros:
    * The cobalt color is really vivid and I think beautiful, it looks better in real life than in Amazon photos.
    * Comfortable
    * Well made
    * Good looking

    The cons:
    * Cotton/Rayon blend doesn't breathe very well, especially compared to polyester or merino wool
    * Cotton/Rayon blend doesn't dry very fast, especially compared to polyester or merino wool

    I've really enjoyed wearing this shirt indoors and outdoors in moderate temperatures. I like it a lot for that. However, on really hot days or when I'm doing an intense workout the shirt starts to get a bit clammy and hot. In those same situations with a polyester or merino wool shirt I feel much better.

    For a casual shirt I think this is a great choice. For a performance shirt I'd recommend the Russell Athletic Men's Short Sleeve Dri-Power Tee and if you have some extra money a nice merino wool T like the Icebreaker Men's Tech T Lite Short Sleeve Tee
