Do not be fooled by price. I got what I paid for. It lasted about 9 months and most of that time was the summer and it was hardly on. Now that its colder the thermostat would only come on if I turned the knob all the way up to the highest setting and even then it would kick off. The water is maintaining 65 degrees. I bought two of these at the same time so put in the new one and that is working but will probably get less than a year out of that one as well.
As the other reviewer said the lifetime warranty is useless. I paid $9 for the heater and they want $10 to send it back. I am basically just buying another heater from them.
I will stick with a visi-therm or aqueon as I have those running in my other tanks with no problems.

I purchased this heater for my brand new 10 gallon aquarium from my local fish store. He began selling these after Visi-therm and their stealth heaters began to not hold up. His selling feature was the price and the life-time guarantee.

Upon first introducing it to the tank, it appeared to work, but I did not have a thermometer yet, so there was no way to tell. I left it at the initial setting of 76 degrees to cycle the tank. The tank glass felt warm, so I assume it was working. After 1-1/2 weeks, I bought a digital thermometer (the same as the one in my community tank). The tank was only 73 degrees. I checked the new thermometer against the old one and they measured the same temperature within a few 1/10's of a degree.

After turning the unit up continuously throughout the evening, I could heat the 10 gallon tank no higher than 75 degrees. This heater definitely did not work.

The guarantee, if you want to call it that, is almost worthless. You must send a copy of your receipt and $10 to the manufacturer, who will then send you another unit. That's more than 1/2 the original cost. More like buying one for retail, and then getting a lifetime supply at wholesale cost.

All I want is a heater that is reliable - I'm not concerned about guarantees. Guarantees don't heat the tank - reliable heaters do. This heater has left me in a lurch.

As other reviews have indicated, these heaters seem to have a tendency to break down. This is especially bad for us now, because the house is colder in the Winter, and our cichlids could be in serious trouble. The warranty service is bad; they don't even take the broken unit back (most companies want them to learn the failure point), and they require a $10 payment to ship a new one. I have lousy Whisper heaters that have worked for 15 years; this Penn-Plax heater is junk.

No trouble so far (a little over a month in). I was really terrified of coming home and finding my fish boiled, and so far, it's kept my tank at a stable ~76 F without any trouble. I've got the 75 watt, for a 10 gallon tank that sits relatively close to the window.

Do be aware that this isn't one you can set manually, it's preset to 76. It states at the top it's manual, but down lower in the description, it goes on to say that it's a preset heater. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of.

I have this heater in my 55 gallon tank, and it keeps the water at 80 degrees consistently. However, the heater is set at 89 degrees (close to the supposed maximum). So, it works perfectly if you ignore the gauge, and use an independent thermometer.

Got this for my 60 gallon fishtank. The setup was a breeze. Short cored about 2ft. If you have a tall tank like I do your going to need an extention cord. It has a nice adjustment knob for the thermostat. I set it at 72 and the next morning my tank was running hot 79/80. I set it down to 68 and in 24 hrs it was reading 71 which is close enough to what I want it to be 72 degrees. the thermometer and heater Are at opposite ends Of the tank. Not as accurate as I hoped for. Use with caution. Takes 24 hrs to get the process temperature of my 60 gallon tank.

Set it, and forget about it. the 150w heater works well for my 30g, and I have no stories to report about it overheating the water, etc. I could honestly get away with using a smaller heater, though, considering I live in Phoenix, AZ, but this works just fine.

Update April 2016 (15 mos. Later): After a little over one year this unit has failed. It broke internally. Coils snapped some how and glass cracked inside. It caused tank to overheat and fish died. I can't believe it! At least my pleco survived. That thing survives anything. I won't be getting more fish or a new heater. I can't trust heaters. I recommend spending extra money and buying the best there is from a reputable Aquarium fish store. Buying on line or from Walmart will only lead to dead fish. I'm now convinced. This heater lasted over a year so I give it 2 stars. I don't recommend it however.

Jan 2015:Works great! I use it with my 10 gallon tank. I have set the thermostat on it a little lower than what is marked. I want 76° so I set it for 72°. My separate tank thermometer show's 76°. I keep an eye on the separate tank thermometer to make sure temps don't rise. I've had a different brand glass heater overheat and kill some of my fish. You must be careful with all heaters and watch the tank temp because no matter how good a heater is, you never know when one could malfunction and over heat killing your fish.
