While I wouldn't expect someone receiving this fun little kit to learn a lot about architecture or design as a whole, it does provides some fun and topical learning of names and varying building design styles. After glancing through the pamphlet, our 9 year old immediately started dreaming up his own creations (aided by the included stencils), and it came out quite nice. With the first one done, he then made another to "fix" some things he wanted changed from the first creation.

For us, this kit is a fun way to spend some time inside without screen time, and for that, it did its job quite well. For the price, they probably could have included a bit more in the way of supplies - maybe a bigger notebook, at least. However, the pieces that are in there are pretty good quality, so I don't have any major complaints about it.

All in all, we're enjoying this quite a bit, and that's for a kid that has never given design/architecture any thought at all. If your kid shows interest in that area, there may be even more interactions and interest as well. Either way, I'd recommend this to at least try out. Note that this is the "Introduction 2" kit, and it's the first we've used; not sure how the "Introduction 1" kit differs.

I was a little disappointed by this kit, having ordered it based on the great reception other T.S. Shure products have received from my grandchildren. For a set that focuses on architecture, I thought it was sort of one dimensional, pun intended. I’m not sure that a young person who had not been introduced to architecture would find this kit interesting. Although I am a big fan of kits for kids - there’s nothing as exciting as a tidy box full of goodies that work together to make things- this one did not seem as “inspirational” as others I have purchased. Although the educational booklet is a good compact discussion of architectural styles and components, I had a hard time figuring out how a young person could then take the tools provided and have a good idea of where to start.

For a child who likes to draw, they could probably just dive into the stencils and the other supplies provided and have good results. For optimal use for someone new to architecture, I think adult involvement would be key. I also think T.S. Shure could consider some sort of brief online tutorial to assist kids in initiating the design process. The one component that I was unsure about was the poster. It seemed really old-school to me, although I did like the fact that it displays many iconic structures. As much as I understand the need to allow for creative experimentation, some structured activities to help prime early successes with the stencils would enhance the overall usefulness of the kit.

This is a nice introductory set. I was a little bit put off when I realized that this set doesn't actually include a little caliper or square or any other tools of the trade to play with. It's basically colored pencils, paper and stencils. However, it is enough to get a child wondering about architecture that could possibly lead to a career later. It also comes with a 20 page book that includes information on different architectural styles.

The stencils include walls, windows, furniture and much more which allows your child to create their very own building using the information they have learned and encourages ideas and creativity. A nice set for a young budding architect.

Unfortunately this turned out to just be some stencils, a brief pamphlet, and few pieces of small material swatch and colored pencils.

Really not worth it in my opinion.

First the positives:

It’s simple enough to understand, and has engaged the interest of two boys (aged 9 and 12) for several hours. As an experiment, I left the set on the kitchen table at home without saying anything about it. Within a few hours, one of the kids asked if he could use it, read through the booklet, and started using the stencils to draw his own floorplan. It’s been a few days now, and both kids have spent several hours creating floor plans with the stencils, examining the poster of famous structures, and generally thinking about architecture as they did so.

So, it’s interesting to kids. They’ve learned a little tiny bit about architecture, and how floor plans are drawn. More importantly, it's sparked an interest in architecture, and they've been having fun drawing their own floorpans, all without any prompting from parents or teachers.

The not-so-positives:

Besides the stencils, there’s not much to this kit. There is the aforementioned poster of famous structures, and a booklet explaining a few basic concepts. Everything else is basic supplies (colored pencils, graph paper, etc.) that can be picked up at any store that carries school or office supplies. If you are looking for something that will actually teach kids about architecture, basic starting point at best.

It should also be noted, this is a 2D drawing kit, not a modeling or construction set of any kind. The product description makes it sound as though kids will actually be “building” something, along the lines of a 3D model or Legos.

Based on contents and depth and breadth of educational content, I’d say a fair price for this set is something around ten dollars.
