The board has a lot of great features, but Asus seems to have no idea how to support it. Consequently, no one can get mine to work — even though it is under warranty. I am considering buying a different board and tossing this one. This appears to be a complete, $600 loss. Ironically, Asus’ “support” has made this even more frustrating.

I had a little trouble getting the board working initially, but ultimately it was pretty stable for about a year. I was having some issues and decided to update the BIOS, just in case my old BIOS version was part of the problem. The update itself was successful, but immediately thereafter the computer refused to “post”. It would start for 3 seconds, then restart, endlessly. (I now suspect that the problem was the BIOS logic changed and the update required both CPU fans to be active. Because this system is water cooled it didn't need to use both CPU fan sockets).

Asus support offered an “advanced replacement” where they send a 2nd motherboard while you still have the first. I paid for next day shipping of the replacement, but they didn't actually ship until 9 days later. When I received the 2nd motherboard, I could not get that motherboard to work either. Asus support agreed that the 2nd motherboard had a problem and issued an RMA for that one too.

While troubleshooting, I was able to get my ORIGINAL motherboard working once I installed a 2nd CPU fan. This is when I found the 2nd problem with the “advanced replacement” program: I was required to return the (now) working motherboard or face a $630 charge; I couldn’t return the defective replacement instead. Because Asus only does an “advanced replacement” RMA once, I also shipped my defective replacement motherboard back to Asus and waited.

This board rocks, I highly recommend it. I built a workstation for HPC using this board:
2x E5-2690
2x EVGA nVidia Titan
2x 32GB 64GB Corsair Vengeance CMZ32GX3M4X1866C10 1866Mhz but clocked at 1600Mhz (maximal official supported speed)
2x Cooler Master 412S
1x Kingston 480gb hyperx 3k SSD

I currently use Ubuntu and it really works flawlessly. I just bumped into some minor annoyances e.g. if you try to force the RAM speeds higher than 1600Mhz it may not post anymore, so you need to clear the CMOS and to do that you need to move a jumper that is hidden well below the graphic cards ... not very practical. For this price tag they could have simply thrown in a CMOS reset button like the RIVE has.

All in all, I am really happy with the functionality and performance. The BIOS comes with tons of settings and seems possible to overclock, though I haven't done so except changing the RAM speed.

If you'd like to see some HPC benchmarks, this is a project I have been developing with it:

UPDATE: The following is a performance guide for this motherboard which I try to keep up to date (updates, suggestions welcome!):

My workstation spec:
1. Two Intel Xeon E5-2690
2. 64BG RAM
3. Two GTX TITAN + GT 610 (I use TITAN as a replacement for TESLA card and 610 for displays)

despite other reviews I would say if you are looking for system for extreme performance, you definitely need this motherboard. So go for which it is working great.

The board worked fine for me, and was one of the first motherboard installations that worked perfectly on first boot.

I used:
2x Intel E5-2690
8x 8GB Samsung EEC DDR3 RAM
1x EVGA GTX 590
2x LSI 9205-8e SAS HBA
1x Intel X520-T2 10GbE Network Card

I needed a super board to build a power station for Premiere Pro CS6 use. I opted for that board since it is one of the rare board that supported dual xeon while having the options I was looking for. One thing to know off the bat, this is a server board, so it is a odd form factor, I had to change case due to that. It took a while to find a tower that could accept that board and the large size video cards. I use a Raidmax case. The first board had issues with the first PCIX slot. Later on I had a problem with a no boot issue, fortunately the board was still under warranty. Since this is a server board ASUS offered a quick replacement option, I did not realize that at first, support brought it up to my attention. It took longer than expected based on the fact this was a server board, but ASUS replaced the board. I had a small issue with the board but a firmware upgrade fixed it. I am using this board with 2 E5-2650 xeon each cooled with Corsair H100 and H90, video with 2 Galaxie GTX 680. This config works well, I recently upgraded to Windows 8 and for several months now this is running with no issues.

Great motherboard I have had no problems other than having to update the BIOS immediately. I installed an Nvidia K5000 video card and it did not recognize it until I updated the BIOS. I really don't see this as a problem, if you are building your own PC you should be able to update your bios. People cant expect a motherboard to always work with every component without updating the BIOS. I also got an alert that I had a hard drive failing. I didn't know the motherboard was testing drives at startup. Really nice surprise.
