OK Old Times

These guys are amazingly fun and dexterous in concert, real characters, especially Mr. Jimbo Mathus. And all those instruments: guitars, mandolins, banjos, lap steel guitar, string bass, harmonica, cane flute, even the "jawbone of an ass" (a mean looking bone rattle) get played at some point in their show. And I loved their first album Home Sweet Home. So I grabbed this one right away. And it's okay. For me that's a little letdown, especially as I can't get enough of anything Luther Dickinson plays on: NMAS, Crowes, or the String Band.

There are some nice hummable moments--and I particularly like Alvin Youngblood Hart's paean to Turnip Greens (really, I mean that unironically). But there are not a lot of memorable singalongs on this disc like you got on the last one. The vocals are a little more self-consciously hokey in places, and when Luther sings on and on about how "I'm white!" it's more wince-worthy than genuinely jocular.

Bottom line: their debut disc made me forget about the real oldtime article for a while. Now this sophomore outing, while it's alright, makes me want to put on those Mississippi Sheiks and Memphis Jug Band discs that have been out of rotation for a while. Sure that's a good thing, and moreover, I can't wait to see these boys go on tour again. And I will pick up their third disc if they record one, because I still have faith, not so much because of this c.d., but because of Home Sweet Home, Old Scool [sic] Hot Wings (JM), Big Mama's Door (AYH), and Mississippi Folk Music (NMAS).

Picking Up Where They Left Off

Their debut CD, "Home Sweet Home", was a masterpiece. "Old Times There" is nearly as good. There's nothing modern about Alvin, Luther, and Jimbo's take on old-time blues. Their playing and singing are remarkable and honest. The songwriting is authentic, if a bit whimsical at times, and the overall effect is quite good. While this may not reach the heights of their first album together, it never disappoints. This is good old blues served up right!

Not a bad listen

Not having experience with this group, I bought the CD based on reviews and what little I knew about their style of play. It's a pretty good listen, but a little ragged and raw in the performance. That appeals to a lot of folks, but if that's not your cup of tea, beware. A good listen for acoustic string lovers.
