My betta fish was so weak that he had draped himself over the nub of a suction cup, just below the surface, and lay there all day gasping at the surface. He didn't move, eat or respond to me. He had no visible symptoms, but he was clearly dying.

I finally poured a dose of General Cure into the tank, in desperation, expecting my fish to be dead in the morning. He wasn't. After four days, when it was time to take the medicine out of the tank, he was swimming around and eating, as happy as ever.

Since then, I've run a preventative dose of GC through all my tanks, and only regret having not tried it years earlier, when it could have saved many more fish from mysterious deaths. It has a terrible name; General Cure sounds like some sort of tonic sold by a man in a straw hat in 1928. It's actually a mixture of Metronidazole and Praziquantel, which fish keepers rate as some of the best medicine for treating many kinds of parasites.

Of course, it's not effective against all illnesses, or even all types of parasites. But one of the best things about it is that it works fast and has few if any side effects. I've seen no ill effects after dosing tanks the house bushy nose plecos, snails, shrimp, minnows, gourami, cichlids, barbs, tetras, danios and all sorts of plants.

If your fish is acting lethargic or not eating, and you're not sure what's wrong with it, I'd recommend trying this stuff as soon as possible. If it works, you should see results within a few days. If it doesn't, you can rule out many types of parasites and move on to other forms of treatment with no harm done.

This could be the swiss army knife of fish medication. It solves a lot of health problems that you may have in your fish tank. The combination of ingredients make this a broad-spectrum medication that is suitable for those situations in which you may not be completely sure of the disease. It is also safe for plants.

Metronidazole treats a wide variety of external parasites. This is a good remedy for those situations in which the fish have already refused to eat. If you suspect internal parasites and the fish are still eating, your best bet would be to feed the medication to the fish. You can mix it with the fish food. I have mixed General Cure with food to treat a suspected hexamita infection in my Rams. It is hard to get the fish to eat the mixture. You may have to starve them for a few days before they will eat this. The best approach is to treat the water according to the directions on the box and to also feed the medication to the fish. You can use Seachem Focus to help the medication stick to the fish food. I have tried it with frozen brine shrimp and with tropical flakes. Here's the bad part. You need to clean the uneaten food out of the tank if your fish do not immediately eat it. The last thing you want is for your ammonia levels to rise during the treatment period.

The second ingredient is Praziquantel. This is the same medication that is used in canines to treat tapeworm infection. It is effective against the same parasite in fish. I have also learned from various internet chat rooms that this is now the medication of choice against flukes and leeches. It is said to be safer than Dylox and copper.

The instructions do not require you to increase the temperature during the treatment period.

Good stuff!

I recommend you DO NOT follow the instructions where after the second dose you wait 48 hours, do a water change and put the filter back in. I did not water change but did put the filter back in. I was assured of a full cure by doing this and my Oscar is remarkably healthy right now as a result. No more HITH and his fin rot went away fast!

Despite the name, this stuff is the go-to product for hole-in-head disease in Oscars, and probably other cichlids as well. Metronidazole is more expensive and as soon as you quit using it, the problem returns. This stuff solves the problem for good, probably because it contains the powerful parasiticide Praziquantal as well as metronidazole. It didn't hurt my lace cats, so it's probably safe for fish without scales, and it didn't upset my tank, however it's powerful stuff and will tend to put your fish off their feed, especially when you first start using it. Follow the directions!

This fish medication saved one out of two of my Fahaka puffer fish. The First fahaka had the symptom of a cripped side fin by its ears. A local Fish Store owner sold me this product after hearing the symptom of my fish. Unfortunately, my fahaka died about 6 hrs after applying this product to my fish tank.

My 2nd Fahaka at first was looking quite unhealthy as I received it shipped to me without the option of picking the healthiest one available. It was under a 14 days stay alive by Liveaquaria. It was skinny, and a chew off dorso-fin, and might have been a worm on the tail of the fish. I've read advices online to not treat the worm under the skin because the medication can kill it but the fish's body cannot remove dead worm and would lead to a dead fish. So, I'd let it be & fed it well. This healthy Fahaka turned black and stayed at the bottom of the bank. It wasn't looking good because it ignored the food and swam blindly in the tank bumping into corners and etc...

I gave General Cure a second chance and applied the powered to the tank and removed the carbon filter at the same time added melafix to the tank. After one day, nothing changed. On the 2nd day, after 36hrs, my Fahaka puffer fish coloration improved and was able to see. It swam around a little bit even though not as active before. I'll follow the instuction and repeat the dose after 48hrs before attempting to feed the fish any food.
