First off, let me say that this unit is the best Gen-1 device I've ever worked with or studied. It has performed almost exactly as I expected, and I like this little unit. That being said:
PROS:
This is the first gen-1 device I've seen that uses a ceramic core instead of glass, making it much more durable and with higher resolution than all the rest. It still uses a gen-1 grade light transferal system, so the light amplification is no better than your average gen-1+ unit. It does, however, greatly increase the quality and usefulness of the device when used in conjunction with an InfraRed illuminator. It also makes it weapons mountable. When used with an Eagletac T20C with 2nd gen. 3.4w IR module, I can just barely identify coyotes vs sheep at about 150 meters. When placed behind an Aimpoint CompM3, I have a hard time identifying anything out past about 80 meters. That being said, my alignment isn't quite perfect, so that may contribute some light loss.
EDIT:
I have since tested the SPARK behind an Eotech 55x, and it is much clearer than the Aimpoint, probably due to better alignment and the larger FOV on the Eotech. ID range through the Eotech is probably 125 meters, vs. 80 through the Aimpoint and 150 through just the SPARK.
Overall construction quality seems excellent.
CONS:
This is still a Gen-1 device, and it really pales in comparison to a Gen-3 unit. The on-board illuminator is only good out to about 5~7 meters -- making it just enough to walk through your average house and have plenty of light. My review. I bought this scope and the Armasight Helmet Mount #3 to use for hunting pigs at night ('cause that's when the little suckers are out you know!) I received it on Christmas Eve and took it to an undisclosed location adjacent to Delta National Forest to try it out. I had no difficulty adjusting the ocular lens and the objective lens to get a fairly crisp image (through out this review I am going to remind you that this is Gen-1 sight, ok?). It was a clear, starry night, no wind, and 27 degrees Fahrenheit (remember to use anit-fog coating whenever you stick your warm eyeball next to a cold lens). Yazoo City was 20 or so miles to my northeast, Vicksburg 40 miles to the south and Rolling Fork 15 miles over my right shoulder--the ambient light from these cities allowed me to see without the illuminator. I could see fairly well out to (my estimate) 20 or 30 yards. When I turned the illuminator on I got an excellent image out to (my estimate) about 20 or 30 yards. If you have ever tried to shine your AAA Mini-Maglite across a cotton field at night this is what I was seeing. The built-in illuminator is good but it has its limitations. When the moon came up I could see very well out to (my estimate again) 100 yards. I couldn't find any pigs to participate in my product review (#$%@^!!).
A couple of things to keep in mind...what do you want this scope to do? I thought that I could use the scope to see my target and use my non-NVG eye to sight my shotgun. By the way, just for fun sometime shoot some 00-buck through a 20" slug barrel with NVGs. It will look like a flash cube!Read more ›
