This is my first spotting scope so I can't speak to how well this compares to other scopes. I purchased this based on the price and the great reviews on Amazon. I wanted an 80mm because I figured it'd brighter than 60mm and an angled one because, well, I don't know I guess I thought angled was cooler than straight :). Someone told me to stay away from cheap scopes and shoot for a $200-$300 minimum, anything less and you'd get useless junk. So when I saw this Redfield for under $300 complete with a tripod and case I purchased it immediately. I took it to the range over the weekend and it worked out amazingly well. I only used it at 50 yards but the .223 bullet holes were clear as anything. I'm not a scope or optics expert but even when I zoomed in on other people's target at 100 yards they sure looked clear as heck to me. The tripod, while I though it seemed a little flimsy, did just fine. I was immediately glad that I decided on the angled eyepiece as I found that with the right tripod settings I could just move by head and look into the eyepiece without having to compress my neck. The carrying case is just a basic soft vinyl pack, nothing special but does just fine for transporting and storing the scope plus the tripod. All in all I'm glad I purchased this item and recommend it to anyone. I posted some photos.

Amazing clarity easy focus and the zoom is intense!! I almost always have it near the lowest setting, but to be fair I haven't looked much past 600yds with it. Redfield knocked this one out of the park it is such a complete package with the tripod, carry case and nylon cover, the rubber armor is tuff. Only two bummers about it but in my mind not a big deal. With the nylon cover on you cannot rotate the scope very far. My bro has the 20-60x60 straight scope from redfield and this is not a problem. and second when you tighten down the height ring to leave the scope on target it drops a bit because the height adjustment bar is a bit loose on the top of the tripod. Again not a big deal all you have to do is compensate.

Not sure what to say about this. If you're using it for shooting, just be mindful of your goals. For NRA Highpower or CMP shoots, you'll be fine to spotting disks and score markers, golf tees for rapid, whatever. Not an issue there. However, if you're using this to practice for Highpower, that is shooting a string of slow-fire prone with .223 out to 300 then I've got bad news for you. I've got good eyes too, but not enough to overcome the mirage and black on black out at 300 with the zoom cranked up a bit. Again, if you've got someone in the pits marking targets, no problem, a dream scope for that, and at a stellar price, lots of options, decent eye relief, and you can adjust the strap the way you like it. But if you're like me and you practice out to 300, set aside another $150 and go for the Nikon or the Bushnell with the ED. I think you'd even be fine out to 500-600 with someone marking from the pits. I had zero problems there, just not .223 on black targets at 300 during normal daylight. Nope, can't do it. That said, I think this is a clear leap over the Celestron 80mm (which I sent back) and the any of the other bottom feeders. Probably a half step up from the Konus, but might not be worth the extra cash. Hope this helps.

I'm not really qualified to judge the optical quality, but overall it seems pretty good for $300. At 60x it's the wind and heat distortion that causes problems before anything else. The focus knob is rubberized, very smooth with effectively no backlash. The zoom is a bit harder to turn than I would like but works fine. It has a sun shield on both the front and back which go out pretty far. One thing that does annoy me is that while their website says "built in Oregon", if you look on the scope you will see "China" (Edit: It said that on their launch video, but they've apparently taken it down).

The scope comes with two lens caps, a view-through case with a detached strap, a larger "storage" bag with a strap, and the small tripod. The front lens cap it thick-ish plastic with two spring tabs to attach it, it works fine although the tabs are a bit exposed and might let it come off easily. I especially liked the back lens cap; it's just a large (aluminum?) cup that screws on over the whole eyepiece assembly with a long and fine thread.

The view-through case works well, lot's of velcro to keep everything out of the way. My other complaint is that the shoulder strap for it attaches with some pretty weak clips so I don't use it.

I guess the tripod is plastic, but it feels pretty solid. The locking screw for elevation doesn't work well with the weight of the scope and it tends to dip or rise after being locked. And the screw that attaches the tripod to the scope always wants to unthread itself, as seems to be typical for these screws. I lost the tripod on a recent hike because I had the scope slung over my shoulder with the tripod attached, and it fell off somewhere. It was a convenient excuse to get a better tripod.

To clarify the weight: the scope itself with nothing but the lens caps attached weighs 3 lbs, 1.6 oz. I don't know what the tripod weighs but it wasn't much.

For the money you are getting a fantastic product. It's definitely not the $600-$1000+ Leupold, but the value is definitely there. You could spend $400-$600 on this scope and still be satisfied.
The good:
1. Price
2. Build quality is more than sufficient.
3. Prisms and glass produce a crisp image in most lighting.
4. It's waterproof and fogproof.
5. Clarity is had throughout the entire scope of magnification (all the way from 20x-60x).
6. While it is a "full size" scope it's weight is totally doable in the hunting field, not even noticeable.
7. Good lens covers.
8. Has an adjustable eye relief cup on the eyepiece so you can rest your eye on the eyepiece and you don't have to guess at the distance for full scope viewing.

The bad:
1. A little prism affect on the horizon and edges of paper targets. Not distracting or overbearing, and should not be a deterrent from purchasing.
2. Some ghosting at full magnification 60x viewing a white paper target at 100 yards. Also not distracting and should not be a deterrent from buying.
3. The included tripod is adequate for table scoping, but since it doesn't have adjustable legs it isn't a huge benefit afield. Just buy a tripod and sell the included one on Craigslist to a photographer, should be an easy $10-$20.

All in all, I would buy this spotting scope again. It definitely isn't as crisp as the midrange spotting scopes, but it performs well in comparison to them. My buddy has a Leupold compact and I had no trouble seeing everything he was seeing elk hunting last weekend. Same goes for sighting in the hunting rifles at the range.
This is a great entry level scope that performs in the midrange spotting scope class and holds its own.
