I was pleasantly surprised by all the brushes in the series. All the brushes behave basically the same so I'm reusing the review for each brush. Water flow is different between the round and flat brushes and I'll cover it last.

From different reviews around the web my concerns were that the bristles would be too stiff, that the bristles would pull easily from the ferrule, and that the water would not flow at a comfortable rate.

When they arrived I was most surprised by the flat brush. Instead of a flat ferrule the brush was actually a full round brush with a snap-off flat adapter. Without the adapter it is dense enough and long enough to act as a very effective mop brush. All the brushes have interchangeable water reservoir tubes; the flat has a purple handle, the rounds have long blue or short blue handles.

All the brushes have soft white nylon bristles that spring back nicely. They were quite dense, with enough bristles that the brushes are easy to control in spite of the softness. When the water reservoir is full they have a good weight in my hand, and I can tell by balance when they start to run low. The brushes work well for all techniques I've used including lifting, splattering, dropping, glazing, and washing large areas.

I've used the brushes for just over a month. They are still very supple and I haven't noticed any significant change to them over time. I have seen practically no shedding, which surprised me. They are very nearly as full and springy as the day they arrived in spite of my vigorous cleaning habits. They've held up much better than most of the inexpensive brushes I've ever purchased.

I use them with Derwent watercolor pencils including their Inktense pencils that will set permanently after their first hydration.

Watercolors have a timeless unique look that simply cant be compared to any other form of wet or dry media. Thanks to this gadget, watercolors now become transportable.

I always have to have this brush in my bag. I use it with a set of hand-mixed watercolors (I bought primary wet paints, mixed them in a plastic palette, and let them dry) and because of this brush my sketchbook is now more alive and vibrant than ever. You can control water flow by squeezing whenever you need to wet your brush on the blue handle. It holds quite a bit of water so needing to refill is not overly common.

When you pick up a color, please note that because the brush is filled with clean water, the color will transition out to clear by itself. It is not like regular brushes that will maintain a single, solid-colored wash if you dip and go. This is a great benefit for some painters and a great hindrance to others. I suppose you could buy multiple brushes and fill them with premixed wash colors if you really needed flat colors, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

For what it is made for this brush is amazing. The bristles do not bend and warp as some cheaper brushes tend to, and despite how often you'll squeeze the handle, the plastic does not change shape easily. Refilling is easy, and the brush wont be stained by your paints. It's truly something worth purchasing.

With this water-filled brush, some watercolor pencil/sticks, and a small good paper sketchbook, you're set to capture wonderful sights/colors/images anywhere. Plus it all goes with you in a large purse--carry a slouchy hobo handbag, and everything fits. I bought both the small and medium brushes. Great find!

I have a Van Gogh Pocket Box of watercolor paints that I use when I paint outside. I used to paint the traditional way in which i lugged water with me, then dipped my brush to add water then into the paint,.... I didn't want to carry that much water, and didn't want to spent that much time cleaning up when I was painting plein aire. This brush cured me of the traditional way of painting.

Now that I use this brush I carry much less water with me, have little or no mess afterwards, and have much better paintings. Since all the water you need is already in the brush its just grab your color and go. The brush really does accept color well, and when it lays it down on the paper you get a nice smooth flow from the brush that gives your paintings a beautiful look. For me, the brush was a godsend. I now have several of these (each different sizes) and use them almost exclusively to do my paintings.

I suppose if you were doing really large paintings, you would still need big traditional brushes, but since I do mostly small to medium sized paintings, this brush works awesome.

Love these brushes. I go almost everywhere with a small sketchbook, a pocket-size set of watercolors or watercolor pencils, and one or two of these brushes in my various bags, since I never know when I might want to do a quick thumbnail sketch of something, or an idea for a painting or other project might come to mind. It's great to be able to just pull the brush out, pop the cap off, and start painting without having to carry a container of water or go hunting for a water source wherever I am. I've been carrying these around with me for years and never had a problem with leaking. The bristles hold their shape very well. Only on one brush did the sponge that separates the barrel of the brush, where the water is, from the bristles of the brush get clogged, but that particular brush was at least 7 or 8 years old.

They are definitely more suited for smaller paintings--the medium-sized brush is about the size of a number 4 or 6 round.
