They need to learn how to ship this

The mat itself is fine -- but when they shipped it they rolled it so the top side curls up. If they just shipped it so the top side curls down, then it would be fine. I put it on the floor upside down which is NO big deal because the bottom side is super smooth and the top side just has tiny little bumps so your chair doesn't scoot out from under you. It has been that way for about a week and now it's laying perfectly flat. I flipped it over and it is staying nice and flat and doing the job. Flipping it over was easier than going to the store and lugging one of these home.

Hey, it doesn't smell!

And believe me, in an office situation, a non-smelly floor mat is a wonderful thing. Heck, in any type of situation that's a wonderful thing!

This is a small mat, true, but it still does the job. As with any purchase in which size matters, you should measure first. After all, the description of this mat holds its size, 36 x 48 inches, so it's quite easy to take a tape measure (or even a yard stick or ruler) and mark out that same area around your desk to see if the mat will work for you or if you need to size up. Its small size won't be a problem if you do your homework first.

Because this mat is made for hard floors, it doesn't have the little nubbins on the back like those mats made for carpeted areas (which is good because they wouldn't work and simply break off, but I just mean there's nothing on the backside of the mat to hold it in place). So this mat will slip around a bit on a hard floor, but it's only an issue when you're walking around and maybe catch your foot on it until you get used to its presence. When you're sitting down at your desk, the mat stays in place, allowing you to roll around in your chair quite easily. And I tell you, that in itself is quite something as my home desk (which is where I've got the mat) sits on tiled floor made from those big 12 inch square tiles which have been eating up the wheels on my chair. With this mat, though, I can roll around like a maniac without leaving ugly black marks on the floor from where the chair wheels have shredded.

Frankly, for the price, I don't see how you could go wrong with this lightweight yet quality mat.

Perfect size for a home office

This is a sturdy, but light weight mat, which is perfect for a home office. I've had none of the problems that some of the reviewers have mentioned. I think the size is perfect, I've used mine every day for the past month with no cracking, and mine was shipped in a flat sleeve, so there were no rolling issues. Great mat, great price. I would definitely recommend this product.

I know immediately on two levels that this is not a perfect solution (for me):

This mat is generous to a fault in forward/back coverage. I wish the excess front/back plastic had been allocated to provide more lateral movement. As is I'm limited to just 4" movement side to side before casters leave the mat (that's not enough!).

The plastic is, relative to other mats I have owned, is about 50% thinner. It is very supple as received. I'll be surprised if it cracks as some have reported and I will update this post if it happens to me. I would not expect this mat to hold up to UV light, but that shouldn't be a problem in a normal office. If your room (especially the floor) temperatures are not on the cold side I can't imagine cracking for that reason; so, if these are cracking for a lot of people that would suggest the raw material used in making these mats is still "curing" even as we received them and after. If the mats continue to evaporate ingredients in this at home curing then the brittleness is inevitable, and it means it is that way by design. Said another way this product, like a carton of milk, may have a shelf-life and its failure could reliably be predicted under average use and conditions. How long before it expires would depend on your home or office environs. These "new car" type smells from the evaporating components aren't that great for your lungs either if that's what's going on. Years ago the first soft plastics used on car dashboards would dry, shrink, and crack but Detroit got the message and changed to plastics that would not lose their suppleness.

As for the condition on arrival, I wasn't surprised, and there were no flyer's inside with tips on how to handle.Read more ›

This mat is small, an inch shorter than described.

First of all, this mat came rolled up in a wavy fashion, rather than a loose roll. No matter how much weight I placed on it, the folds would not come out. Secondly, it only measured out to 35" x 47", an inch shorter on each length than described. When a mat is this small, that much area makes a difference.

My wife's home office has a desk and a table forming an "L" shape to accommodate a work space for her printer, scanner, PC and two flat screen monitors. This Floortex Phthalate-Free PVC Advantagemat, Rectangular Chair Mat with Lip for Hard Floors, 36 x 48 Inches, Clear (PF129020LV), Amazon Exclusive provides just the area she needs to match the carpet desk mat that she already has on this low cut carpet.

It was light, thin, easy to install and just perfect for the space she needed to roll her office chair back and forth on the two mats.

While this mat is made for hard floors, it works fine for short thread carpet, does not smell and is perfect for our home office. It is a clear, durable and quality UV protected vinyl mat that is flexible and a lightweight 4.7 pound.

Too thin for low pile carpet with padding
