KC and the Sunshine Band’s iconic self titled second album was released in 1975 on TK Records label and helped pave the way for the Disco craze that was taking off in America. How do you review an album that is perfection from start to finish? Fueled by the one two punch of #1 across the board hits “That’s The Way (I Like It)” and “Get Down Tonight”, the album truly is a ray of sunshine and a perfect example of mid 70’s combination of R&B, Funk and Dance Music. It would be very unfair to label KC and the Sunshine Band as just Disco since all the tracks on this album are hard hitting funky R&B grooves, including the legendary two aforementioned smashes. In addition to “That’s The Way (I Like It)” and “Get Down Tonight”, “Boogie Shoes” was also a hit and found it self on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack several years after it’s initial release on this album. Also, all these hits found a home in the clubs and Discos across the world and received heavy airplay on both Pop and R&B radio stations. In addition to the hits, “Let it Go (Parts 1 and 2)”, “I’m So Crazy ‘Bout You” “What Makes You Happy” and “I Get Lifted” would be just as welcome on the Dance floor. “I Get Lifted” was written by Harry Wayne Casey for George McRae and was included on the Soul Crooner’s “Rock Your Baby” album, that title song also being written by HWC. Displaying his versatility and depth as a singer and songwriter, Harry Wayne Casey also wrote the beautiful “Ain’t Nuthin’ Wrong” for this album and it’s a gorgeous mid-tempo R&B groove and will put a smile on your face and will make you long for a ride in a convertible with the top down.Read more ›

Let me preface my review by saying that I'm a big fan of BBR, a new kid on the block that appears to put a great deal of effort in resurrecting long-forgotten R&B/Soul/Disco classics that have for the most part been abandoned by their original record labels, and for that alone, I give them a big thumbs up. Most BBR releases are usually far and away a huge improvement over previous CD versions. However, when compared to the 1994 Rhino release of this recording, I was surprised to hear BBR's version being only slightly better than the original. Rhino's version is pretty much unplayable by today's standards - you've got to jack the sliders way up to get decent volume out of it. I was really expecting BBR's version - a very recent release - to have a lot more "wow" to it, with louder volume, cleaner, clearer highs and a much punchier, thumping bottom end. As far as volume goes, it's an improvement over the previous 1994 release, but not by very much. To be fair, all other BBR remasters I've heard so far have been outstanding, and this one's OK - BUT, it could have been way better still. Despite everything, it's still the best available version of this album out there, and the liner notes are extensive. The album itself, of course, is a classic - no complaints there.
