In theory, the concept behind this cup is a good one. The Reflo is meant to be a device for teaching toddlers to drink from a regular cup without the fear of them getting a face full of water (or milk), or spilling the liquid and making a huge mess. Accordingly, the Reflo cup looks like a typical toddler-sized cup, except that it has a plastic disc with a serrated edge that sits about a third of the way down from the mouth of the cup, which controls the flow of liquid to prevent major spills. Although this flow-control disc is what makes the cup a good learning tool, it is also what makes the cup so user- (parent-) unfriendly. The instructions that come with the cup warn that it's important not to use excessive pressure when inserting the disc into the cup, to prevent it from getting stuck. However, it's very hard to gauge the perfect amount of pressure to use, and you have to get it exactly right or suffer a major inconvenience. Use too little pressure, and the disc simply falls out, causing ALL the liquid inside to spill out. Use too much pressure, and the disc gets stuck in the cup, requiring a lot of effort to remove. When I first used the cup, I tried to insert the disc with just enough pressure to get it to fit securely in the cup without getting the disc stuck. Well, guess what? The disc ended up getting firmly wedged in the cup, and my attempts to pull it out using the miniscule grab handles built onto the disc were completely fruitless. As was my attempt to follow Reflo's own instructions for removing stuck discs ... slowly putting some water in the cup, turning it upside-down and whacking the mouth of the cup against the sink. I tried in vain to use vegetable oil and even liquid soap to get the disc to budge.

I LOVE this cup and, most importantly, so does my 15 month old son. He hates sippy cups but loves to try to drink out of my cups so I figured this would be prefect.
I was hesitant because of negative reviews regarding the disc being too loose or too tight. BUT I've had nothing but good experiences so far. I push the disc down really firmly and test it before I give it to him, and I am easily able to remove it with the little handle.
My son is now happily drinking from a cup at meals!

UPDATE 8/8/15 (now owned for almost a year) -
Still loving this cup! I have noticed that filling it more than halfway makes it a bit more likely that the disc will slip out when drinking from the cup or when its knocked over. I actually recommended this cup to a client bc the kiddo was having a hard time transitioning from bottles to cups, and they had tried SO many types of sippy cups (just like I had). They love it as well!

I have been purchasing several different types of cups to assist my 2 year old in transitioning from straws to regular cups. He did not like any of them. I ended up giving them away. I decided I would try again when I saw this on amazon. It arrived yesterday. I gave it to him, he said "thank you" and started drinking from it right away. He had a few spills the first few gulps and then he got used to it and it will be real cups from here on out. THANK YOU for this great product, I am going to order more today... THANK YOU!!!

I wanted to update this review. I have had this cup for about one week and I decided that since my son had an easy time using it that I would try a regular cup. Well today I gave him a toddler sized cup and the first time he started drinking from it with no issues. I am so excited that this Reflo Smart cup was a quick transition and the best part is that I can still use this cup with or without the insert so there is no money wasted here! Again, I am very pleased with this purchase!

When i was searching for free flow cups, to wean my baby from bottle(and skip sippy cup stage altogether), i came across many such cups. After trying many, i finally settled on this one for following reasons:

- It doesn't require your baby to push some lid to make flow working, or sip hard to get liquid out. It is as close as possible to natural drinking way and flow.
- The flow isn't overwhelming for toddlers/babies.
- The stopper inside sits tight, even when you turn the cup upright down.
- Now ofcourse there will be some leakage from it, if left lying on floor. But for my purpose, i keep eye on my son when i was making his transition. This is not our travel cup. I use it more like weaning cup.

My only issue with this was it was too large. My son likes small cups that he doesn't have to tilt too much to drink from. If i give him just 2 oz liquid to start weaning gradually, as i don't want him to waste milk. To drink that 2 oz, he needs to tilt glass at high angle that is not convenient to him yet. I was hoping Reflo will have small size cups in market too, for smaller babies. As much as i like this cup and its concept, i really wish there was smaller size available.

But still, as per my search, its still closest to natural drinking cup available in market.
