This unit gives you sine wave output with no frills at an attractive price.

Be aware of the limitations of this new model at its price point. This is not a desktop product, so don't expect extras like ethernet or coax surge protection. It is less capable than some other APC UPSs with equivalent VA ratings; for example, the SMC1000 is rated for 600 watts, vs. 700 for the SMT1000. It has a 2-year warranty, rather than the 3 year warranty carried by most recent APC products.

Most importantly, this unit uses the new "Microlink" protocol, and does not have an expansion slot for adding a UPSLink interface. This means it will never be possible to fully interact with this unit using open source software, such as NUT or apcupsd; you can only get the most basic information out of it, such as line power up or down. Neither NUT nor apcupsd will be able to query it for load, output voltage, recent events, or many other things.

If these limitations don't concern you, it's a good value, and is the lowest-priced APC UPS with sine wave output. It's perfect for protecting the availability of a small server.

I noted that another reviewer complained of noise, but mine is nearly silent except when operating on backup power.

Unless you are already very familiar with the differences, before you commit to this UPS consider getting to know the differences with some of the other popular home and small business UPS models by APC and perhaps at least one other brand to find what fits your needs best. I've described at the start some summary differences below to help you choose if the SMC1000 is the right one for you.

APC SMT vs. SMC:
------------------

Some differences between the SMT and SMC models from APC:

- SMT allows adding optional, alternative NETWORK MANAGEMENT CARDS
- SMT offer greater control over utility/online to AVR transfer points
- SMT has AVR boost and trim, SMC only boost (there is some uncertainty about this even though this is what APC engineering said. I hope to nail this down definitively soon).
- SMT has 3 year warranty, SMC 2 years
- SMC has a novice friendly display with big icons (like the CPxxxPFCLCD), SMT has simple LED Text though with much more informative ALERTS.
- SMT offers more control and access from LED display buttons, such as sensitivity, voltage thresholds, view logs, outlet groups, self-test, diagnostics, and alarm mute. This makes SMT often a BETTER CHOICE than SMC for Apple Mac users and when no computer being battery powered. SMC buttons allow sensitivity change, alarm mute, and self-test mostly.Read more ›

I used to be a big APC fan, using and recommending their UPSs for the past 20 years. Until recently I had never had a need to call their support, but a replacement battery for a Smart UPS overheated due to overcharging by the UPS, boiling the acid, releasing hydrogen sulphide and making a huge mess. The UPS is damaged and the battery pair are both destroyed (melted!).

When I contacted support I found out that APC is owned by Schneider Electric and they have offshored all their support. Normally I'm ok with that but they should be embarrassed by their support partner. I was asking about thermal management in the UPS, to understand if there was some sort of monitoring circuit to see if the battery was getting too hot since the pair I had in the UPS was melted. Each email response was from a different support engineer and they collectively, have been going in circles.

Along the way I was told there's no risk of fire or explosion from the hydrogen release from the batteries (which I don't believe). The APC replacement battery was less than 3 years old yet the support engineers told me that a failure in that time is expected because of my environment where the UPS is gets up to 100F for a few hours in the middle of the day. The operating range is documented to be 32F to 104F, so I'm inside that range. In the end they told me that I could trade-in my UPS and buy a new one, but the cost with the trade-in was more than purchasing new here on Amazon.Read more ›

Style Name: SMC1500
The "SMC" line differers from APC's "SMT" line mainly in that you can't plug in their $220 Network Management Card. If you will need that level of sophistication, by all means look at the APC Smart-UPS SMT1500 1500VA 120V LCD UPS System instead.

(Note that APC's older "SC" line that the "SMC" line has now replaced delivered an inferior type of power that only vaguely approximated, through a series of stair-steps, the smooth curves of normal power. The new SMCs deliver the same smooth sine-wave power as the SMTs, erasing the critical difference between the two.)

I've been buying APC sine-wave UPSes for around a decade now and have been very happy. They are smart looking and work well.
