There was a time when we listened to music in our living rooms. Out loud. That enjoyable experience is making a welcome return because it is fun and because of advances in digital technology. Traditional stereo receivers seem almost quaint these days. Speakers with built-in amplifiers are becoming the leading edge in home music appreciation.

Elvis Costello once said, “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture. It’s a stupid thing to try to do.” Read on, you’ve been warned.

Listening to the Vanatoo Transparent One speakers for the first time is mesmerizing: they produce a very wide sound stage, and they have astonishing presence with deep, rich bass, and silky smooth clarity. Imaging is uncannily accurate. Solo singers are dead center while you can actually sense the position of the surrounding musicians. With closed eyes it’s hard to believe that all that sound is coming from speakers that measure 10 inches tall, 6.5 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. (28cm x 16.5cm x 20.3cm)

Each speaker contains a silk dome tweeter and a patented 5-1/4 inch XBL aluminum-cone woofer on the front with a matching passive radiator on the rear. If you stand close to these speakers, you can feel the music viscerally. You will be surprised at some of the extraneous sounds these speakers will reveal: breathing, page turns, orchestra shuffling. I have a Haydn symphony underneath which I can hear the low rumble of a truck passing outside the studio.

Transparent One contains a built-in 60 Watt per channel amplifier with an embedded DSP (Digital Signal Processor). The Vanatoo engineers have matched the input signal to the speaker drivers. This results in nearly flat frequency response.

20 of 21 5 star ratings as I write this. This ought to make it 21 of 22.

I listen to classical music from the terabyte+ of MP3s I have saved (VBR rates up to 224 Kbps), while sitting at my computer desk. The speakers are placed at the places where they fit.

It's a small room, maybe 13 feet square.

I've been listening to Logitech Z-2300s and they were OK. Small room, three feet from my head. Subwoofer.

I thought.

The Vanatoo T1s are several orders of magnitude above any other small speakers I've heard. This is a totally different experience. Everything I've been listening to before seems like I heard it through a pillow. (I'm not sure I've heard anything better, anywhere.)

A pro: they are profanitying amazing!!! I turned off the equalizer in itunes and everything I've listened to is so clear and distinct. I feel like I'm in Bach geek heaven. I've sampled orchestral, choral, arias, piano, harpsichord, organ and side 2 of Abbey Road.

A con: They cost $500

A pro: They only cost $500!

I haven't even burnt these things in yet, It's just been 4 or 5 hours.

If $500 won't make you skip your kid's doctor appointment, then you should get these if you like to listen to music at your computer (or anywhere, but these seem designed for a small situation) and want to experience music that is more intimate and clear than if you were wearing top of the line earphones, without the drawbacks of earphones.

They seem perfect. They are just 10" tall. How can sound like that come of of a 10" tall box? I might try plugging in a subwoofer, but so far it seems unnecessary.

$500 was more than I would normally spend on something like this, but they are absolutely worth it.

I have just spent 4 weeks auditioning a pair of Vanatoo Transparent Ones. Just couldn't do the financial stretch to keep them!

Right now I have in my possession a pair of Audioengine a5s hooked up to a Firestone Audio Fubar 2 DAC+supplier (It had to happen as my wife was bemoaning the removal of the Vanatoos.) It is so interesting to compare them.

The AEs are physically bigger and noticeably so;

AE bass sounds a little forced and flubby compared to the tightness of the Vs, despite the bigger cab;

The AE's do not have the connection flexibility of the Vs;

Definition is not as good on the AE despite a decent outboard DAC;

Now we are getting subjective but AE sounds like a good big computer speaker whereas the V is a veritable Hi-fi speaker. It really is night and day.

When we can, we will get the Vanatoos and keep them.

UPDATE++++++++++++

Well, in mid April 2013, we finally gave in and got the Vanatoos. The AEs are now in our son's room. He is pleased but we are delighted!

Been listening to these for about a month and really enjoying them. I love having 3 inputs hooked up and not having to select which one I want to use with a switch. Easy to hook up, worked great out of the box. Powered monitors that only require one speaker cable, a power cord, and the inputs you want.

My 3 input setup :

1) USB - straight from my iMac
2) Digital Optical Audio - from my Airport Express 2 (allowing streaming from iPad or iPhone)
3) Analog in - from a mixer board which is hooked up to guitars and keyboards

The Transparent Ones switch auto-magically (after a 15 sec. period unless inactive, then immediately) to the input where the signal is or in a priority hierarchy if there is more than one input active.

Sound :

I turned them up quite loud on a classic album I've used for decades to compare systems (of course, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon). I was very impressed with all levels of tonal reproduction (highs, midrange, and bass). As mentioned in the article you won't get over the top bass from a speaker this small but I did hook up my high quality Velodyne 10 inch sub-woofer and it not only worked flawlessly (regarding auto cross-over sensing) but they sounded truly amazing together. The combination (of Transparent One and subwoofer) is a well balanced full range speaker solution for those needing deep bass. The mid ranges and highs were very clean over the tight bass from the Velodyne. Also impressive is their low volume definition, the highs remain crisp and lows tight even when played lightly.

Overall, I'm very happy with the speakers and highly recommend them. They are great value for the money.
