Keep you refund trigger finger warmed up when you order these. My first set (as others have reported) were DOA. Amazon of course made the return painless and costless. The second set flickered on/off now and then the first couple of days, but since have been working fine for the last few weeks. I took the control box apart, and the circuity driving these lights is rather laughable. A tiny unsecured circuit board kind of flopping around inside.

But the thing about these lights is that they are Cool with a capital C. They're fun. They stretch out 20 feet to slightly illuminate the surroundings with multi-colored LED lights shining through likewise multi-colored Chinese lanterns (the quality is actually decent on the lantern hardware. It's an appealing presence and they kind of make you happy as they glow merrily through the evening.

I would not be concerned about the reviews commenting on the lights losing their longevity as time passes. It's really ez to pop in a replacement battery. I posted a photo that shows what it looks like inside the control box when you remove the four small phillips screws. The original 60mAh AA battery has been replaced with a $2 Tenergy 2600mAh rechargeable. You need enough sun to fully charge the battery, but a quality battery (like this or an Eneloop) is going to last longer than the original even if it never reaches full charge.

UPDATE March 1st, 2016: After some period of time the lights stopped working. I swapped batteries to see if that was the issue. The lights worked at first but after a couple of days they no longer came on. This told me that the little circuit board was probably ok (the lights worked until the fresh battery went dead), and that the solar panel was probably fried. The lights look nice, but even after a full day of direct sunlight charging the solar panel, you only get a few hours of these being brightly lit. I've had others that last at least 7-8 hours, these maybe get 2-3. They look nice, but wish they lasted longer.

Update: After a year of usage, the lights lose most of their power and lighting dims significantly, but you can replace the battery and they are as bright as new. Expect to replace the battery yearly, but at least you can get the original brightness back without having to replace them.

I was amazed at the high quality of these lights. The lanterns are well made and I'm expecting to last many years. It was a little difficult to assemble the lanterns, but once done they look great. Also, the color of the lights coordinates with the lantern colors which gives a very rich color at night.

The string looks great aesthetically, as the little globes are really nice and so are the colors. When lit it is really nice looking as well. My issue is that the stupid thing just won't charge like it should. It sits in direct sun pretty much all day and we were only getting maybe an hour of light at first, quickly dwindling over the first couple of weeks. I read that someone bought some Tenergy 2600mah rechargeable batteries to put in it and that fixed it, so I spent about as much as this whole kit buying these batteries. Did it work? Every few days, if that, I guess because it charges so slowly that it took that long to charge the extra capacity batteries. So, I bought some regular 600mah batteries, again at my cost, and they didn't fare much better. Today I cut off the power supply entirely and I'm going to use what is inside to try and build my own power supply. The "solar" part of this is just junk. Weak sauce. So I'll go ahead and buy a charger for all of my new batteries (these lights are now getting expensive) and just pop one into my new supply when I need power and flip a switch to turn them on and off at my discretion. I like these enough that I'd buy another set or two to finish out my new porch in them, but I'll take the matter of powering them into my own hands because I don't trust the solar powered part.

Edit: Lowered this to a one star. Maybe should go to zero if that were possible. I had noticed led's working a bit inconsistently and now two appear to be out. This is just total garbage. Nice little globes and that's about it.

Exactly what we needed for the RV. The length is just right across the awning. We charge it during the day, even if we're traveling, and when the sun goes down, the lights come on automatically. Perfect if you are camping where you can't plug in. To test, cover the sensor. Looks great!

I, like other reviewers, have had had a mixed bag result with these lights. First thing is that did not get my order, so after 10 days or so, I contacted Amazon who promptly sent me another set. Then after a month, the first set arrived. I had a terrible time convincing the person who answered the phone that I wanted to pay for the first set. His English left something to be desired to say the least and my Hindi is non-existent. :) But the lights themselves are really a mess. Only half of one set lights works, and that is in a flickering drive-one-crazy pattern. Half the other set worked for a few days, then gave up entirely. The solar panels are indirect sunlight such as it is this time of year, but the product is really not very good. I would not recommend it for anyone to buy. In addition, I had an electrician install the sets, so I know that are is not the problem!
