The Pulltap Double Hinged Corkscrew, made in Spain, has inspired a wide range of knock-offs and copies. The copies are all made in China and are sold for much less, sometimes side by side with the real thing. The copies all mimic the shape and function of the original, but some of them are rather shoddy and poorly finished. Many people feel, however, that of all the copies on the market that the TrueTap Double Hinged Corkscrew comes the closet to the original, and may equal it.

I purchased both a genuine original Pulltap Double Hinged Corkscrew and a TrueTap Double Hinged Corkscrew to see for myself. Upon setting the corkscrews side by side it becomes obvious that the TrueTap is a near 100% clone of the Pulltap in every detail. That said, there are a number of very distinct detail differences.

The differences are: The Pulltap weighs 69 grams, the TrueTap weighs 67 grams. The Pulltap handle is finished in a glossy solid color, the TrueTap is finished in a metallic color. The Pulltap handle is slightly wider than the TrueTap handle. The Pulltap corkscrew has a larger diameter than the TrueTap corkscrew. Both the Pulltap and the TrueTap screws are about the same length. The black Pulltap screw appears to be coated in nonstick, the TrueTap screw is finished in black but is glossy and may only be painted. The foil cutter blade of the Pulltap seems to have a slightly better fit to the handle, the foil cutter blade on the TrueTap is somewhat looser on its pivot pin and has more "waggle". Both the Pulltap and the TrueTap have black plastic inserts in the handle, with notches molded in to accommodate the corkscrew.

Both the Pulltap and the TrueTap have rather poor chroming, unusual considering Pulltap's reputation for quality.

Was worried about buying something with no reviews, but took a chance for the color. Quality is quite great, especially considering that with shipping it was under $10. I work in a restaurant and just refused to use a plain black one. Get compliments on it all the time. The handle is very ergonomically correct. The foil cutter has worked well and hasnt dulled a bit. I would recommend it if youre looking for a stylish, durable daily wine key. The color was a little more neon than lime, but not too bad.

This corkscrew works perfect for a sever or bartender where the primary concern is speed and ease of concealment. I open about 20 bottles of wine a day with this true tap and I see no difference between it and the pulltaps from France. The paint is thicker and seems to be superior to the pulltaps in every way. They both function exactly the same with the true taps seeming to have better quality. I think people who complain about these types of wine keys don't know how to use them correctly. I can't say for sure if this one will last as long as my pulltap because I haven't had for a year yet.

Pros- heavy duty, small, lots of colors, cheap
Cons- people like to steal them.

This little bottle opener is a champion multitasker behind the bar, at the tailgating party or at the ready in your kitchen drawer. Unlike the old fashioned "Church-Key" style openers that are only meant for beer bottles, the Truetap opens troublesome can tabs, beer bottles and wine bottles. It has a scorer blade* to remove foil from wine bottles. The Truetap is lightweight, will easily fit in a bar apron or pant pocket and ergonomically designed. I highly recommend this product.
*Contrary to popular belief, the scorer is not meant to be sharp and merely pressed firmly against the foil and top groove of the bottle neck ferrule.

I like the color and since this color was quite a bit cheaper it is a bargain corkscrew. The flip out foil cutting blade is a bit small and has very fine serrations which do not cut really well, but with practice you can get the foil off without slipping and cutting yourself. A curved blade with larger serrations would be an improvement.

The screw is a bit thinner than I expected but it goes through synthetic and natural corks with ease. The part of the screw that attaches to the body and forms the hinge is narrow but pretty strong, no bending has occurred thorough many uses.

The double hinged system is fairly good at getting out the cork including some longer ones. After screwing the screw almost all the way into the cork, you use the first silver lever and it pries the cork up quite a bit, then you position the second lever and pry all the way out. You have to go slow on the second lever since going fast can cause a POP and some wine may get sucked up and splashed out when you pull the cork.

All in all a decent cork screw at a really good price. No more fancy ones for me, even the Screwpull has gone way downhill, I have been through 3 of them in the past 5 years or so.

UPDATE: A little less than a year of use and about a few hundred bottles, the straight sides of the levers that press against the lip of the bottle have flattened. This is because the steel isn't strong enough to handle the extreme pressure you might need to get some of the olde,r dryer, or synthetic corks out of today's wine bottles. Both levers suffered this fate and now the levers slip right off the lip. Still not a bad screw for how cheap it was. My next one will probably be the popular Spanish one.
