Initially, when the fully charged battery was inserted into the grip with no battery in the camera body, the battery symbol in the camera LCD FLASHED INDICATING A DEPLETED BATTERY. Removing the battery and putting it in the camera indicated a full battery. No problem with the battery. This happened several times so I decided to return the grip and have Amazon send me another. The quality is good and the rubber is a better match to the camera body than the Nikon brand. It also fits more tightly and the rubber has a slight smell that is in no way offensive. It is milder than both the Vello and the Nikon brands. Here's hoping the exchanged item has no communication problems with the camera electronics .

This is my first review, and I want to scare any photogs from this piece of junk Spend your money wisely and carefully, but stay away from this. This has locked up my Nikon d7100 more times then I can remember, causing lost opportunities. The lockups cause the camera to stop responding to any button pushes what so ever. The only way to fix the camera is to remove this unit and the camera responds like normal. I tried to return this item, but the time period for returns has expired. You have been warned,

I've been using this battery grip for a couple of months now and have had not a single problem with it. It took a bit of reading my camera manual to learn how to set it up for back button focus but once I figured it out it works flawlessly. The fit is smooth and it communicates with my D7000 with no issue whatsoever.
