Earlier this year, I bought a Schlage keypad lock, and it was great - just the thing we needed to be able to give codes to our kids, the babysitter, etc. The downside was, you had to go through this manual process to activate or deactivate a code. Kind of a pain. Then I saw the Nexia system on Amazon - it was on sale, and it seemed to have every feature the original lock was missing:
- the ability to add and remove codes from the web interface
- the ability to set times where a code was active

Plus, it allowed control of other devices to control lights, thermostat, etc.
Sounds great, right? I thought so, too.

I bought the system, and when it arrived, I installed the lock (which remember, I had previously done successfully with a non-Nexia version, and it worked great - still does). The lock did not work. I un-installed it, and re-installed per the directions, double and triple checking the steps. Still dead. Now, I'm a pretty handy guy, both with electronics and DIY projects. I'm a certified computer network engineer. After doing some testing, I determined that the wires on the lock that connect to the battery had a faulty connection. It was 10 PM, so I put the old keypad lock on, and called Schlage the next day.
When I eventually got through their phone tree to an actual person, they went through a checklist, and concurred with my assessment of the problem. They said, we'll send a new lock. Three days later, a new lock shows up. I install the lock. the keypad works just fine. (I've had a lot of practice with these now, so it took about 5 minutes to swap it out)

Ok, let's get everything hooked up to this cool Nexia system! Let's remember, I'm a computer pro, so adding the bridge to my home network, setting up the accounts, etc.

The lock is high quality and is easy to install. I really like the extra kickplate with 2" screws that make it harder to break into the house.

However, the bridge can't connect to the Nexia server so I can't compelete the setup, and there is no technical support available on Saturdays. For a self-installed product, some type of Saturday coverage is essential. Right now, the bridge is connected to the internet but for some reason can't communicate with the Nexia server. Online documentation is poor, with no real troubleshooting steps available save calling tech support MON-FRI during business hours, when I'm not likely to have access to the system as I work.

If I'm able to resolve this issue on the phone, I'll update the review, but if not, this will be returned.

UPDATE: Nexia customer service called me at home on a SAT morning and fixed the issue. Setup was a breeze and the system is now working to control the lock and the lamp. However, now I can't log onto the subscriver community to troubleshoot and I can't add codes to the lock. I get an error message saying that the code is already in use on the lock. Moving up to three stars due to great customer service response, but this is a bit too buggy and without access to the secured forum troubleshooting is going to be a pain.

UPDATE 2: Issue was my fault...I walked away from the lock before it was done communicating with the bridge. Once I followed instructions (duh!) system worked perfectly, great customer service from Nexia, great lock, no complaints. Upgraded to 5 stars.

I saw a similar product on SharkTank (I'll save you the trouble - not ready until 1st quarter 2013 at the earliest) so started to do research and turn to the place I always turn to first - Amazon :)

I looked at all these options and the one thing that keeps me from getting this lock is the subscription. I'd rather pay more upfront and then not have a subscription; these companies don't get modern pricing models (successful ones). More people would buy these if they killed subscription fees.

I wanted to join in on the subscription complaint in the hopes someone from the company is reading this. It's the principal of having to pay a monthly fee to get into my own home.

NOTE: YOU MUST PAY THE $10/MO SUBSCRIPTION FEE PER BRIDGE DEVICE. This is a major disappointment that a single user/family cannot manage multiple homes or even two bridges in the same large home. Had I known that up front, I would've looked more seriously at other technologies.

That said, we liked the one we installed at our vacation home so much, we bought a second for our primary home.

Pros: What I really like about this lock is the flexibility it offers. You can use a key or a combination and the combinations can be set statically or dynamically, such as offering a specific code to a guest or housecleaner that one works for a limited time period or on a certain schedule. We can give each kid their own passcode and even receive text notification when they use it. As far as lock automation goes, it's pretty good stuff. I had to make a few calls to support during the installation phase (more below) and the support was very quick to identify and resolve my issues.

Cons: Most annoying thing about this is the underlying technology. The Nexia Z-wave router must be attached to your internet router and DHCP must be configured on the same said device or the Z-wave router will never get it's IP address. There's no logical explanation for why a simple DHCP function cannot work the same as any other device out there. Once initial setup is complete, I've been able to move the Z-wave router to another location on the network, and use an alternate DHCP server and it seems to be fine (yes, I have a complex network in my house).

Next most annoying thing is the subscription requirement. It's really more the $10/month than it is the thought of a subscription. Seems to me that $20/year is more realistic.
