As with all things in photography, the 12-35x is a compromise. A good compromise, but a compromise all the same.

As with all my reviews, I will preface that I am a part time pro photographer. My to kits consists of a 5D Mark II with a stable of L lenses and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 along with the Leica 25 1.4 and the Oly 45 1.8 and now the 12-35 2.8 X.

Pros

-great autofocus speed and accuracy on OM-D, very similar to the Leica 25 1.4

-excellent color and contrast, although not quite as good as the Leica 25 1.4

-useful zoom range, but would prefer slightly longer tele end aka 24-105 FF equivalent

-usefully fast constant aperture

-sharp wide open results, especially at the tele end, almost as good as primes mentioned above

-reasonable close focus distance

-weather-sealed construction to make the most of OM-D and a perfect travell / hiking lens

-Canon L series build quality (really feels like a mini 24-70 L zoom!)

Cons

-2.8 max aperture good for shutter speed / low light / low ISO, but not enough to create really shallow DOF on 4/3rd sensor (really need 1.8 or 1.4 depending on focal length)

-Chromatic Ab., color fringing in highlights, and slightly soft corners wide open ( none of these are unusual though, even on the Canon version and CA and fringing easily corrected in post)

-Cost, although I am sure Panny will sell enough of these to justify the price. At $999 this lens would be a steal, seriously.

Overall impressions

This is a critical lens for the M43 system and really helps make the whole format a viable alternative to pro DSLRs.

I've been waiting for this lens ever since I sold my Canon 17-55 f/2.8 lens a year ago. My wait started before any rumors this lens existed. I always dream for a fast constant aperture lens. It's no longer a dream. This lens is here and better than what I expected.

The build quality is great.

Size is about 3 times the Panasonic 20mm lens. It extends out more during zoom. This is one of the larger lens in the Micro Four Thirds lineup. I uploaded some pictures of the size comparison under 'customer images' above.

It weighs 305g so it's more comfortable on a camera with hand grip - I'm using it on a GH2. It's also weather sealed so it should be difficult for dust and water to get in. Zoom and MF rings are well damped. There's image stabilization.

The lens comes with a lens pouch and petal lens hood.

It's a marvel to get a 24-70mm field of view with a f/2.8 into this size. It's way lighter than the 17-55mm lens from Canon and Nikon that weigh 645g and 755g respectively. Weight is the reason why I sold my Canon lens. I still love Canon's image quality, but I prefer a lighter photography setup.

Image quality is great. Sharpness is reasonably good, best at f/4.

At this very moment, both the Panasonic 12-35 and the Olympus 12-40 sit on my desk. Originally, I made the decision to buy the 12-35 due to the perceived size advantage that it has over the Olympus but I was curious about whether I made the right decision. Well, I'm still not sure.

The comparative image quality has been discussed many times before and all that I can add to that discussion is that they are both very good and that you won't be disappointed with either. As an EM-5 user, I haven't had CA issues with the Panasonic, and any difference in sharpness (if it exists) is negligible. Optically, the lenses are both excellent and this isn't really a factor as I decide which one to keep.

What I can say, with certainty, is that the 12-35 is a fantastic lens with several advantages over it's cousin:

1) Build quality-- Initial reports of the Olympus being the best built M43 lens were, in my opinion, completely inaccurate. The lens mount issue aside, the Olympus falls short of the Panasonic on several points. A) The zoom ring dampening. The Olympus is uneven with resistance being more pronounced at the wide and long ends of the range. It isn't much, but it is there. The Panasonic is smoother and even throughout the entire range. Really, I haven't used one smoother. 2) Lens wobble. With the lens zoomed out to it's maximum length, the Olympus lens has a small amount of play; you can move the lens up and down and side to side. Again, it isn't significant, but it is there is reason to question the manufacturing/design of the Olympus. And no, it isn't simply my copy. The issue has been discussed, and it is accepted as being normal. The Panasonic, at maximum zoom, doesn't move at all.
