Product Description

The g-1 military flight jacket is the commonly accepted name for the fur-lined-collar world war II-era flight jacket of the united states navy, marine corps and coast guard. The g-1 remains a current uniform-issue item in naval aviation and is arguably best known as the leather flight jacket worn by tom cruise in the film top gun. The earlier jackets were constructed of goatskin and had a real mouton collar. Current model issue jackets are constructed of cowhide and have a synthetic collar. The alpha model is made of the finest goatskin leather available, and real mouton fur. This style features underarm gussets, knit waistband and cuffs and a bi-swing back for free range of movement.

    I've never owned a G-1 or any leather flight jacket before. I have several Alpha nylon jackets. I trust Alpha, so I ordered their G-1 when it came time to get a leather jacket. I don't have a whole lot of experience with leather, especially leather flight jackets, so I hope I can accurately give this jacket a review.

    My first thought was that the jacket is thin. I expected it to feel similar to other leather jackets I own. The leather is very soft and supple. It's very high quality and feels very nice. The real fur collar is very nice too. It looks like a collar from the earlier M-422A jackets. The jacket is very comfortable and hangs well. The zipper is really nice. The bi swing back is awesome. The jacket didn't need any breaking in. Just a little careful steaming to remove some wrinkles from shipping.

    I'm a bit surprised that the jacket is as thin as it is. I need to wear a sweater underneath to stay warm around freezing temperatures. But overall I'm satisfied with my purchase. Alpha always impresses me with their quality and fit.

    I ordered a large and I'm 5'11" and 205 lbs - Nice snug fit. I would say this jacket fits great if you are my hight and between 180 - 210 lbs. Good quality light leather, just the right weight and feel. If you want a heavier leather then get a cowhide jacket. I had cowhide before this and it was too heavy for me, although very warm. Delivered in great condition and on time as expected. Looks just like the picture.

    This leather jacket happened to be discounted at the time of my purchase. For the price, it is a great jacket. It's heavy and made of seemingly high-grade leather lamb. It is WARM in cold weather. Only two minor shortcomings that do not merit changing it to 4-stars. First, the sleeves were slightly disproportionately longer in proportion to body length.

    Secondly, the two front pocket buttons popped off with the slightest tug on the pocket flap. It is made in Pakistan; perhaps they are not knowledgeable about placing a reinforcement swatch of heavy material inside the pocket lining to anchor the stitching that secures the buttons on the pocket. Even with the slightest of pressure on lifting the pocket flap, the button thread is ripped from and through the leather pocket and lining,

    I will have to take it to a leather seamstress to reattach buttons with an anchor tab this time. If it weren't for being leather, I'd' probably use Velcro on the pocket flaps instead of buttons. All in all, it's a great jacket with pretty good stitching. I hope they used a strong nylon thread and not the cheaper cotton thread. We'll see.

    Purchased this jacket for my son on December 9, 2014. He wore it occasionally through April (about 4 months) and recently started wearing it with the cooler weather in October 2015. It hung in his closet for 6 months over the spring/summer/early fall. Now, the fur on the collar is falling out in big clumps exposing the surface underneath. Therefore, the jacket is not longer wearable. Will be contacting Alpha Industries Customer Service for a resolution. I have a leather Navy flight jacket from my service days (1970-74) and it is still in great shape. I hoped for the same long service for my son. I hope they take care of the situation.

    I'm 5'9'' and around 160lbs, I ordered Size S as recommended, It perferctly fits me except that the sleaves are a bit long. I prefer color brown because I think Black might makes me looks older than my age. And I did right. Nice Color and Soft Leather, I believe It helps me cope with this not quite cold winter.
