Sanford & Townsend's "Smoke From a Distant Fire" was a great song. And it was from a great LP which had many catchy pop-rock songs with that slick California sound, such as "Oriental Gate," "Shake It to the Right" and "Rainbows Colored in Blue." And then they disappeared from the radio. And while the "Smoke From a Distant Fire" LP was released, stand alone, on CD, the CD seemed to have disappeared quickly and for a long time was available only used and, because of its scarcity, outrageously priced.

It's now been re-released on CD, packaged with a later LP, not the immediate follow-up "Duo Glide." "The first 10 tracks on the re-issue are the "Smoke From a Distant Fire" record. The songs are professional and polished to perfection, slick as river rock, but they still sounds great after all those years. Buy this record for a reasonable price on some Bicentennial Era musical awesomeness.

As for the nine tracks from "Nail Me To The Wall," well, this answers the question as to why Sanford & Townsend disappeared so quickly after "Smoke From a Distant Fire": the quality of material is not there. "Just a Fool" is good, but it's below the standards of even the weakest track on "Smoke." (For the record, that would be the forgettable "Lou.") So five stars for "Smoke," but two for the "Nail" tracks, which averages out to a well-deserved four-star rating.

Ed Sanford and John Townsend first worked together in their native South, but it wasn't until they moved to Los Angeles that their music garnered any commercial impact. The duo initially signed on as staff writers, but their aspirations to perform was achieved via songwriting demos and a contract with Warner Brothers. Their self-titled 1976 debut was produced by Jerry Wexler at Muscle Shoals, but even with all that going for it, it didn't make a commercial impression at first. It wasn't until the single "Smoke from a Distant Fire" climbed the chart and the album was reissued under the single's title that the duo gained traction, including opening slots for major `70s hit makers. But as hot as the single became, climbing to #9, the duo was never able to chart again, and was dropped by their label after their third album.

Like many one-hit wonders, Sanford & Townsend made good music both before and after their brush with fame, and their albums have something to offer beyond the single. Johnny Townshend sings in an arresting tenor reminiscent of Daryl Hall, and the Muscle Shoals sound, supervised by keyboardist Barry Beckett, is solid and soulful. The duo's songwriting is full of hooks that should have grabbed more radio time alongside Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, Orleans and Hall & Oates. Recorded in their home state of Alabama, the duo's lyrical milieu was often cautionary tales of Southern Caifornia, to which they added carefully crafted moments of country, blues and Doobie Brothers-styled funk. The group's third album, 1979's Nail Me to the Wall, doesn't fully measure up to the debut with which it's paired, but both provide worthwhile listening beyond the well-known single. This particular Sanford-Townsend product consists of not only the excellent first album, Smoke From a Distant Fire, but also their third album, Nail Me To The Wall. While the third album doesn't reach the same level as the first (mostly due to the great single version of the title cut) , it is the only way a collector gets his hands on the recording of this. I enjoyed hearing the band on its third album, but think one can clearly see that the band is not as focused as it was on the first album. Still, it's very enjoyable for a casual listen and I'm happy that after several aborted attempts to release "Nail Me...", that it's finally out in some form.
