I don't understand why this vac doesn't get more attention here on Amazon. I kept dismissing it because there was very little info and the one star review. It was three times the price of the Eureka 71B that I was considering as my top choice.

Eureka 71B Hand-Held Vacuum

After some availability problems for the 71B I came to realize I didn't really want or need the roller brush on my quick use hand held vac. We have a lot of long hair in our family and I would be always cutting it out of the roller brush, like I have to do with our large main carpet vac.

I reconsidered my price range and looked at the Hoover Porta Power and the Oreck XL Pro that I am reviewing here.

Once I looked at the online owner's manuals for both of these I chose the Oreck because there is a replaceable filter for the motor (comes with a package of filter bags ) that is not owner replaceable on the Hoover. Another consideration is the way the motor/fan is to the rear of the filter bag on the Oreck rather than on one side and bellow on the Hoover; that made sense from an engineering perspective.Read more ›

I have 2 Orecks at my house and wanted a small canister vacuum for my second home. In spite of the fact that there was only one review and it was 1/5 I purchased this unit and am happy. The flexible tube is 24 inches long and extends to 32 inches and the extension tube is 19 inches but extends to 30 inches so that's a full 5 feet of reach, and the unit is hanging from your shoulder at waist height. In case you don't figure it out there is a button on the tube to allow the extension to open to full-length. I'm over 6 feet tall and can use the crevice tool on the floor with no problems and without leaning over. It would be nice if it had come with a few replacement bags but not a deal breaker.Oreck Xl® Pro 5 Compact Canister Vacuum

I've had one of these vacs for a few years. I use to keep my work sites clean when I'm doing final finishing on remodel projects. It's a lot handier than a shop vacuum and it is surprisingly powerful. I use it for cleaning up tile work, finish sanding, light routing, and a bunch of other jobs that don't call for my 14 gallon, 5.5 horsepower shop vacuum.

Even though it gets tossed around like the rest of our power tools, it's still in good shape and doing what we need. If we do manage to break this one, we'll buy another.

In short, WELL PLEASED. I found unit to be of high quality, well designed, and incredible in it's cleaning. I am extremely satisfied with job it did on hardwoods floors, oriental rugs, cleaning upholstered furniture, and sucking the dust off of furniture. As I have a lot of Victorian furniture, with lots of nooks and crannies, molding, carving,etc . . . lots of places for dust to accumulate, I was pleasantly surprised at the great job this unit did in cleaning all af these hard to get to places. Unit has A LOT of suction.. While cleaning isn't my idea of fun, this unit makes the job considerably easier. Would not be without it.

A week after I purchased this item, the extender piece cracked. I contacted Oreck via phone as per the warranty and was told to fax the receipt and explanation to them complete with my phone and mail address. 2 1/2 months later I still have not received a response from my fax although I was told over the phone they would ship a replacement part to me immediately upon receiving the receipt. The vacuum works great otherwise but mine is now fixed up with duct tape. I am VERY VERY disappointed in Oreck customer service and I would hesitate to purchase another Oreck product in the future. NOTE: this is not a reflection on the distributor of the product since the vacuum arrived on time and in excellent condition. The problem lies with Oreck and their warranty customer service.

We owned an older version of this same type of the Oreck hand held vacumn cleaner. We loved it and used it for years. When it finally gave out, we ordered this one expecting the same great quality. Not so...yes it does a good job picking up the dust/dirt, but the flexible hose is about 1 foot long, and isn't very flexible (hey Oreck, have you stopped laughing yet???). They did away with the scent holder, so now if you want to leave a nice scent behind, put it inside the vacumn bag. Also, the attachment for the hardwood and tile floor is a joke, we just happened to have the floor attachment from our old Oreck and are using that. I would think twice about buying this particular product.
